I am the recent new owner of a European 1988 LJ70 2LT. There isn't much rust, but one place that needs some serious TLC is the exposed metal where the weather stripping fell away and didn't protect it around the sliding rear windows. I have no idea how I would go about removing that metal, is it possible? Can I order new parts? Or should I remove the rubber, coat it, and replace the rubber?

Thoughts? Advice? thank you!

Remove the rubber and window? I would, if you have a dry place to keep the truck.

At the very least I would use a rust converter or a paint that can go over rust before putting things back together.

It would be better to weld in new metal where needed.
Old metal can be cut out with a cut-off wheel mounted on a grinder.

I have air die grinders and an electric angle grinder. They make electric die grinders also.

I am not 100% sure of this, but I think Toyota switched to Stainless Steel window frames on the later 70-series. I have been meaning to follow up on this and check if it is true...but I haven't done so

If this is true, sourcing the new-updated window frames would be the ticket.

Maybe some of the more knowledagble folks might chime in a verify this statement?

Good luck with the fix. IH8RUST, too.

Yes this is true , post 90 70s have stainless inserts which won't rust. my 91 SWB 70 has stainless ones while my older 86 are steel ( which are somehow still mint) Certain model prados are the same , my 1992 prado body has the same stainless windows too

Best fix would be to find some of these from a wrecker etc , pull out your windows and install the new ones after a clean and some cavity wax etc as the body frame itself around the frames are prone to rusting after the steel frames rust out. Install the new ones and you'll likely never have to look at it again

Happy land cruising
