This is an awesome post. We should organize something on the forum where users post detailed pictures and/or video of how-to's. Start with basic stuff and progress from there. I'm an inexperienced wrencher and get nervous to do anything, so I know it would help me, and surely some others. Sometimes, it can be embarassing to ask questions and even when they are answered, the text is sometimes easy to get lost in.

Changed my 80s oil for first time today.

Was looking like half banana until I got to filter removal - crikey! Fortunately Dad saves the day by putting one of his bandaids over the power steering hose clips that were gnawing on my wrist. My first real foray into the engine bay, hopefully of many.

One trick that enabled me to finally get the filter off.. My filter end socket was a bit too large for the Blue Mountain oil filter that was on there. I put a blue shop paper towel on the inside of it and it made it much more snug and gripped the filter enough to get it off. Otherwise I'd still have my hands in there.

Happy Father's Day!

Okay, another thing I almost always do on my vehicles is pre-saturate the new filter's media with fresh oil. You might thank this is over-the-top (aka: anal), but I can't see a good reason not to do it - it's so easy. I started doing this years ago on my KTM's old toilet-paper roll style oil filter and after hearing about people blowing their filter housing upon initial start. There's got to be considerable pressure as the pump and filter recharge after an oil change. Consider the time and energy as cold, fresh oil is forced into and through a dry paper filter.
I take the new filter and pour it about half full (not half empty) and rotate it around in my hand so that the paper media sucks it up. When I go to install it, even if it's horizontal, there's not enough oil left unabsorbed to run out.

Changed my oil this weekend and tried the punch a hole in the filter trick. Result was that I made about half the mess. Apparently I didn't do it right. I laid a bunch of paper towels in under the filter and they all got saturated. And the hole in the bottom drooled all over when I went to remove the filter from the engine bay (from above).
I punched a hole in the center of the back end of the filter. Is this correct? Or should I have pierced the side?
Using the 90905-20004 from Thailand.

Huh, I too have been changing the oil in my cars for 10 years. But the hole punch trick...I didn't know it. Pre-fill your new filter, now I will. Thanks mud.

Did my first oil change today, thanks thread!

Didnt try the filter punch or filling the new filter trick. My 91’s filter is straight up, would this still work?

Hi,
Could anybody give the correct part number of the oil pan drain plug for the HDT engine?
I found in the internet different numbers but I am not sure if they refer to the oil pan drain plug: 90341-10006 (discontinued??) replaced by 90341-35020 (also discontinued??) and finally 90341-18057. But I also found 90341-12012. Is any of them correct? Or do they refer to the other oil drain places like transfer case or axles?

My oil plug/drain washer looks different from yours. I use the blue fiber coated aluminum washer - Toyota part # 90080-43037.

I also always use a Toyota oil filter part # 90915-YZZD3.

I agree that you should prefill your oil filter prior to installing it. I generally add 7.0-7.3 liters (7.4-7.7 quarts) of oil afterwards. I ran 15W-40 oil during the summer in Las Vegas and 5W-30 during all other times.

I use an oil filter: Terrain Tamer No TTO-421/90915-03006(Z334)

Sump-Plug Washer: 90430-12031 but it looks identical to your 90080-43037.

The oil: 10W40 7000 D Total Quartz
But the (correct) part number of the drain plug is still a mystery. Does anybody know? I have an MTM version. For ATM the part number is 90341-18057. But I can not find anywhere if it is the same for MTM.

I believe Toyota part numbers 90430-12031 and 90080-43030 (may be the black fiber version) are suitable alternatives. The washer dimensions should be 12mm ID x 1.6mm thick.

After some search, the correct part number of the oil pan drain plug is: 90341-12012.

I recommend www.partsouq.com to use to find the correct part numbers and to purchase when available in your country.
