Yes. This was the first time I have ever done an oil change. After searching for a thread and reading folk draining fluids other than the engine oil I had to post.

Time: 30 min.

Tools needed: 14 mm socket and maybe an oil filter remover of sorts.

Following FSM:

After removing oil filler cap. Take a 14 mm socket and remove the oil drain plug.

Use a bucket or an oil catcher or sorts to collect the oil.

After draining the oil you will need to remove the oil filter located in the engine bay on the DS.

Remove the oil filter and clean around the oil filter installation surface.

Put drain plug back with a new drain plug gasket.

Add an new oil filter by first spreading some new oil around the gasket. Hand tighten the oil filter.

Proceed to fill oil back into the engine. Using a funnel use 7 qts of oil.

Put back the oil filler cap. Let the vehicle run for a few minute and check for leaks. Done.

Having changed oil on 100's of vehicles I forget that some may not know how. I'm sure there's lots of people who will appreciate this and will get them wrenching for the first time! You'll probably need to add about .8qt more oil.

An opportunity to wrench is a terrible thing to waste. Great post. Hopefully it brings others into the light .

x2! It's posts like this got me into wrenching on my rig more and more.

Although I always use mityvac to do oil change so I don't have to get under and worry about the plats and crush washer. Emptying out into travel safe containers is just as easy with flip of a switch. Only time I spill anything is when I take out the darn filter.

Why can't all manufacture replace the stupid oil filters with cartridges!!!

I thought the capacity was more than 7 qts, more like 8. Don't forget the filter has some capacity as well.

might be worth to consider a higher weight oil in warmer climate - just sayin'

Nicely done, Al. Just changed the oil and flushed my trans for the first time in my 06 and it was like an erector set. I miss my 80.

...speaking of removing the oil filter, is there a bonafide trick to not making a huge mess when doing this? Changed oil/filter for the first time in my 80 a week ago and all was going fine until i tried to lift that filter off and man o' man did things get messy fast. Yes, I'd let the truck drain for at least 20 minutes or so before going after the filter....

I've been using the suction method for over 10 years now also but I do it the regular way about every 4th change to drain anything that might be missed in the bottom of the pan.

Update: I've been using a 6 liter Pella extractor on my other cars but now it's not big enough for the 80. So I went looking at the Mightyvac and saw this:

I used this on my 2002 BMW and it seemed to work great, but the next time I went to use it- oil started coming out of the T-Handle where air normally is the only thing that escapes. I called the manufacturer, and they advised me that some synthetic oils (Mobil 1 in my case) can cause the seals in the lower part of the canister to degrade and will allow oil to bypass.

There were several others who said the same thing, mostly about Mobil1 which I use a lot. Any problems with synthetic here?

x2 on the 8qts. 2 Rotella Jugs of 15W-40 to be exact. I don't mind if there's a little too much oil in there because it'll leak out in a week anyway thanks to the front main and oil pump cover.

I placed a shop rag underneath the filter anticipating a mess. I thought about placing a good size piece of painters drop plastic running from oil filter and covering axles and all. It wasn't that messy.

I also agree on the 7-8 qts of oil.
I would have felt bad if I would have stated 8 qts and a newbie went 8qts and put more than needed. Too much is as bad as too little, right?

When I started reading this thread, I was saying to my self "I have changed my oil many times, I am wasting my time". But it never ceases to amaze me the amount of information you can learn from the great folks on this forum, even for something as simple as changing the oil. My life will be changed forever!:D:D From this day forward, I will always poke a hole in the top of my oil filter and let it drain. Thanks NLXTACY!

To the original poster... Nice write up. If there isn't an oil change sticky in the FAQ, this would work.
