Hello fellow ih8mud’rs,

First post here. This was my dad’s dream car back when I was in elementary school. I remember going to the dealership with my dad when I was about 12-13 and sitting in a Land Cruiser for the first time. Truly something memorable.

Fast forward 20 years, I purchased a ‘00 LC 100 in October 2019 from a family that was the original owner. She was sitting at 257k miles when I made the purchase. Currently at 263k miles...after roughly 14 months of ownership. My intentions aren’t to use the “Landy” as a DD...more like 4-6k miles per year. I’d love to use it as a weekend expedition vehicle with my family to explore NH, VT, and ME.

Exterior: Color - Navy Blue...Now the troubling part, there is definitely some pretty bad rust in the under carriage (frame, steering column, etc). Small body rust is also visible above the wheel well. Minor dents and scratches. I can tell this LC has lived an awesome life so far.

interior: Color - Sand...Some visible tears in the front seats and steering wheel. To be expected in a 20 y/o vehicle with this mileage. All other mechanic functions in the interior work just fine. The only thing that is a little strange is that a lot of heat appears to be coming from under the center console and front passenger seat. One last detail that I really enjoy is the feeling of pressing buttons, they feel so robustthat it could last a century.

Drive: love the way it drives. The seating position...the sounds of the v8 engine. The armrests and grab handles really makes you feel like a boss when driving it!

Next steps:
1) I’d like to know if replacing the frame is an option that could be cost effective. I’ll post more pictures of my Landy.
2) Are there any land cruiser clubs locally in MA or Southern NH that you know of? How about local LC specialists?
3) What kinds of build out would you all recommend for a family-friendly off-roader?
4) What could possibly be the issue causing the heat under the center console?

thanks so much and I’m so excited to start fixing her up!

frame swap is a huge undertaking, it can be done but is very labor intensive

trying to remember if there re heat ducts going to the rear of the console, maybe one is disconnected? is it plugged up at the outlet?

Labor intensive, but if you have a place to do a frame swap and the tools then could be a payoff. A rust-free frame from the southwest will run you $500-900.

See here: North American Clubhouses - East Region

Maintenance before mods. Get the drivetrain in good shape (wheel bearings, cv axles, etc.), refresh the suspension (bushings, ball joints, shocks, etc.), and steering (rack, tie rod ends, etc.). Then put some decent tires on, drive it, then figure out if you really need or want any of the other stuff.
4) What could possibly be the issue causing the heat under the center console?
Exhaust leak, transmission fluid is old and running hot, transmission cooler isn’t working properly, heat shield missing, engine cooling system is dilapidated and running hot, etc.

Thanks...I'm going to take it to a frame guy locally to have them take a look at it. I'd like to get an estimate from them on how many hours it could possibly take to complete the job.

I'll also take a look at the heat ducts to see if perhaps that the driver. Let me check on that and get back to you. Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks JunkCrzr89, unfortunately I don't have the space at my current place but I'm going to start researching local shops that specialize in frames. I'd love to purchase a new frame as treating the current one probably won't be able to save it. Do you think the rust-free frames would be coming from a junk yard?

"Maintenance before mods" ... that's the right mindset. I need to focus on making sure it's safer to drive. I'll post some more pictures this weekend so that you can see what it looks like. It ain't pretty!

Exhaust leak could definitely be an issue as I recently failed inspection due to the muffler issue. Not sure if the heat shield is missing but when I take to a frame shop I'll get a closer look under the chassis.

Yes, plenty of good rust-free frames at junkyards. 👇🏽
