Help me make this tech!!!!

Just pulled the new to me Hj-60 in the garage from a weekend in Tahoe and all I can say is wow, is my truck slow. I can't believe the difference altitude makes with this engine. I almost got good enough as to predict our altitude by the amount of power loss. I rarely got out of third gear on the highway and even had to dip into second quite frequently. Injectors and all filters are being changed this week and i hope that helps a bit.

I had to tell someone- and you guys are always listening.

From what I hear from everybody here, the only cure for altitude sickness in our diesels is a turbo.

Yep, same with mine. At sea level it kept up with cruiserbrett's FJ62. After 4000 ft it sucked, no it blows, it blew a lot of black smoke. At 6000 ft I was getting passed by everyone including a minivan towing a trailer. That was a humbling experience, all I passed was a bicyclist. Mine did not have a High Altitude Compensator. Does yours have it, David?

yeah, really wiped the smile off my face pretty quickly. Then i just started laughing and waving. No HAC on mine. Did you turbo yours Dave? After this experience, and the amount of time I spend in my car, I may need to look for a "boost" of some sort. I'm planning on visiting Rob at Radd Cruisers in a little over a week, maybe I can source something there.

Wayne, where are you located?

A turbo is a HUGE help. In Mexico in 2002 I was passed by everything while I was pushing out black smoke at about 8000 ft. Turbo'd it in 2003 and now in Guatemala I can pass almost anything at 5500 ft. and I've even got decent power at 12,600 ft on the highest point of the Interamericana Highway without being pursued by black clouds of deisel smoke. I've heard though that the 2H doesn't like turbo's as much as the 3B.

leaving tahoe, west on I80, there's a long fairly steep grade that climbs from Truckee (5,00') to Donner Pass (7000'). My turbo diesel 60 pulls it better then my old V8J60. Turbo'd motors are nearly immune to altitude compared to NA motors.

you can go the expesive route and buy a "kit" or you can do some research, and some junkyarding, and fab a junkyard turbo (LeBaron, Saab, 80's Mustang).

good luck.

Isn't the 12H-T engine basically a 2H with a Turbo and a slightly lowered compression ratio - 18.6 rather than 20.7. Pretty sure the 2H should take to being turbo'd rather well.

Intercooler may help as well at altitude.

the 12h-t is a different animal, same block, better lubrication (piston skirt oiling or something if i remember correctly) direct injection etc. like comparing the first F engine to a 3fe.

but in aus, we turbo the 2h (some supercharge) they handle it fine if you don't boost it too hard, they do have a weakish head compared to the B series, H and 1hz motors. i think i saw somewhere about dropping compression ratio to compensate by using a thicker head gasket, but i couldn't tell you where i saw that.

a friend of mine has a sweet 2h turbo troopy, and it runs fine.

Cant wait to get my 1HZ turbo'd/intercooled..
