Thought having a fire extinguisher on board couldn't hurt. Mounted it to the rear pillar with the 3rd row seat belt bolt.

Good idea to replace the mount. The plastic is not intended or suitable for vehicle use. I think you would be safer without the extinguisher until a proper bracket is installed.

Location is too far from the driver, the most likely candidate to need and use it. The extinguisher itself seems a bit large and heavy and could become a deadly missile if the car stops suddenly either by brakeing or impact.

There are smaller ones about twice the diameter of a 2 battery flashlight and as long that should fit nicely in the sidewall of the Drivers footwell with snap clips for easy access. It should be adequate to end most fires if cought early enough.

In general, a single small hand held fire extinguishers is going to be hard pressed to extinguish any kind of serious fire, especially if the fire involves hot engine and gasoline. Bigger is better as long as it is mounted such that it will stay in place in event of an accident. The bracket and the method of mounting the bracket need to be well considered.

Agree with the missile comments and the plastic mount not being appropriate for the auto environment. However, that's actually an excellent location from the perspective that it will always be available even if you've got cargo or gear back there. Fast availability is key, and so is the extinquisher being where it always is no matter whether you have gear or whatnot aboard. In a panic, you'll go right to it. I've looked around a bit for a spot and there is simply nothing forward of the rear edge of the middle row that is not objectionable due to getting in the way of passenger usage, or directly striking a passenger in an accident.

If you like the location, perhaps a tether could be added that would hold back the missile effect. What comes to mine is a pair or three quality stainless hose clamps around the extinquisher with a cable run through them and thus clamped well. A steel loop is bolted onto the seatbelt bolt and the cable loops through a hole in the loop. One end of the cable has a climbing style rated locking carabiner that locks the cable into a loop. In this way, a severe crash would break the plastic mount, but the cable would be stout enough to control the extinquisher in a small swing radius. Unfortunately, part of the swing radius is going to blow the side cargo glass out, but if you're unconscious at the wheel of a wreck starting to smoke, having an exinguisher hanging out for all to see might be a good thing, eh? Obviously, the carabiner would then function as a quick release to get the extinquisher in service.

thanks for all the good ideas! somehow i lost the pics for the first thread... ill try to get them back on.

You could try a commercial fire extinguisher service company for mounts. They will have the proper type for in vehicle.

If they are feeling generous, they may give you one, as they likely have a pile of mounts from expired exinguishers that have been removed from service.

Here's how my Halon extinguisher is mounted in my Acura.

Funny, I was just trying to figure this one out last week. It is manditory in Brazil that a charged FE be mounted like that on the drivers seat in every vehicle.

Hoser...or anyone...

Where can one procure such mounts?

I don't know anywhere who manufactures such mounts for a Land Cruiser but it looks easy enough to fabricate at home. The red bracket is available from the FE manufacture.
