we had carpet cut for testing but haven't found a good solution for adhering it. know of some folks who had them powder coated with good results, painted with steel it with good results, etc.

with the high thermal conductivity of aluminum, your skin/flesh will cool it off pretty quick (jkjkjkjk)
Not quite the same application, but similar: I've bonded Aquatread to motorcycle gas tanks as grip pads using 3M Headliner Adhesive. So the application is a porous synthetic product bonded to metal that sees large temperature swings and it has held up flawlessly for years on a few different bikes. It's a spray contact cement similar to their Super 77, but specifically designed for automotive headliners. Might be worth a try.

Thanks for chiming in. I agree adhesion would be iffy. I'm curious how that SeaDek stuff would hold up. It's badass on boats and coolers, not sure it'd like being on a tailgate...but they do use it on RV steps and such too. I'll do some more digging...
Well somebody had to be the guinea pig....and over a year later here we go. Got a bad case of cool parts envy on the Rubicon with @lelandEOD and ordered my @Delta VS tailgate panel. Also ordered a sheet of SeaDek and gave it a go. Final install will be this weekend, but it's looking good so far. The SeaDek cuts easily with a sharp razor knife, and you can chamfer the holes with a countersink bit in a drill. I'll knock the edges down once installed with a coarse sanding disc on a right angle grinder. Tried it on some scraps and it works out pretty good.

I’ve done a few boats with seadek and similar non brand names. One thing I can tell you is it stretches easily when the backing paper is taken off so going slow on the lay down helps. And in all cases, I’ve used contact cement to adhere, regardless of being self adhering or not. But I see no reason it wouldn’t hold up in this application. It’s held up for years on my gator tail with LOTS of abuse, from froggin fishin and huntin all sorts. Sure, sharp heavy stuff can rip a lil chunk here and there, but never anything major and rarely noticeable honestly.
