I am very impressed with your results. I can imagine the looks of envy you get wherever you go with it. Very nice design thoughts such as where you stow the legs.

Have you thought of how much the complete package is worth including the RTT? I am thinking about going down this path with a budget around 2500.

Well the RTT was close to 2800, As for the trailer I payed 700, and about 800 to 1000 more for the mods that I have done so far.

Cheers

Thanks for the breakdown. 2500 is my initial - get the project going budget. I am not talented at all, so I will be working and spending over a large period of time.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Added some fuel cans to the front of the trailer last night. Still need to add one to each side.

I know they're Michelins (XZLs???), but believe they are no longer available in that size.

It would be best to check the date of mfg on the tire if you do have a set of these on an M101. Most of the trailers surplused had decent tread from the comments I've seen, but many were showing signs of age - cracking, etc. And that was some time ago.

As for the size I don't know off the top of my head but I will check. I have put on around 10000 km on the set that are on the trailer right now and they still look barely used.

Where do you guys find these m101's? I have been scouring the classified and craigslist to no avail around montana? can you get them from army surplus or something?
Pretty late to the party, but I just came across the thread and am adding this tidbit for ya:

So I decided to scrap the pintle and go with the Max coupler. I did this for two reasons, first on our last trip I had a problem with the pintle binding and bending the crossmember, second I was tired of the clunking. Since I was changing to the Max Coupler I also decided to make the receiver on the trailer adjustable.

Final results: I just need to pick up a drop receiver to get the trailer to sit level.

First pic is as close to the truck as it can get (about 8" from original), second is probably where I will have it most times and third and forth are just there. The sections are 1 foot increments.

Need to get 4 more shock boots to cover the back posts and it will be done.

Well this is a very nice trailer! Great job!

Sent from deep in the mountains of Honduras using only sticks and rocks.

Finally got the trailer outside to try it out:

Sorry to be the douche here... but

Tho' it looks good from far... close up, maybe less so.

The paint color choice is ugly and don't match yer hauler ??

The paint and it's prep seems lacking and hurried (sloppy)

The rtt rack combined with the cover (lid) looks to be a pita to use, as the lid opens minimally

The tongue looks to be too long...
and the trailer doesn't sit level, as it looks to be tongue high.

I'm sure you don't really care what I think...

But since you post this on a public forum... I get to add my $ .02

regardless of my critical comments...

I will hope it serves you well and fulfills your needs.

Now you can hate me... instead of just mud ;)

O well

The paint and it's prep seems lacking and hurried (sloppy)

It was build to be used and easily touched up.

The rtt rack combined with the cover (lid) looks to be a pita to use, as the lid opens minimally

With a tailgate this is not a problem, with the tailgate up I still have about two feet to get things in and out. Its much better then before when the tent was on the lid and i had just use the tailgate.

The tongue looks to be too long...
and the trailer doesn't sit level, as it looks to be tongue high.

When it is actuall on flat ground it sits level, as for the tonque it is only 6" longer then the original.

I'm sure you don't really care what I think...

Everyone has different tastes!

Nice job!!! I picked up an M101 in Kelowna in the middle of the winter and have a couple questions, I too have been trying to figure how to set up the winch / lift idea, can I ask where you forced the struts and the deployed height? also I am considering plywood coated with Als bed liner for the lid and some side pods for a kitchen and storage, any thoughts on this idea?
Thanks and very well done.

Cheers Peter in BC

The bottom of the tent is at about 80" from the ground. The struts are inside each if the posts and they are charged at 85lb each. The nose box that I have is made out of 3/4" birch plywood. I sprayed some kind of cheap bed liner stuff from Canadian tire and then painted over it with some tremclad. I'll see how it lasts, the only time the trailer is outside is when we are using it and the rest of the time it's stored in a garage so I think it will be fine.

So if I understand correctly the winch line is attached to the front end and you simply push/pull the rear when raising/lowering the RTT. Reason is I am building an M101A1 for camping and have temporarily made my canopy adjustable with sliding unistrut and manually raise and lower it with pins. I like this trying to see if this idea can integrated into my build some how.

THanks

Can you give more details of the system lift system? Great build !!!!!

The pipe size are 2" DOM .243 wall and 1 1/2" pipe. The 1 1/2 " pipe slides into the 2" pipe. The struts are inside the 1 1/2" pipe and are sitting on the bottom support. At the top of the strut there is a washer and nut that pushes on the bolt at the top of the 1 1/2" pipe.

hope this helps, here are a few more pics:

The washer /nut on the top of the strut.

The strut pushes on the little bolt.

and one more:

The winch line attaches to the top of the rack at the front and back like this:

I only have to pull down a little bit on the back so it comes down evenly.
