I have two funny noises on my 89 FJ62 that I am working on tracking down.

Funny Noise Number One:

An odd noise from under the hood. It sounds like a chirp. Chirp is the best word I can come up with to describe. It is intermittent, quite loud, and sharp. It will do it when I am driving, but it will also do it at idle. I cannot seem to do anything with accelerator pedal position to get the noise to happen. It has a mind of its won. I was guessing maybe I have some bearings going out. (If you ask me why I think that, I will have no answer other than that it is a hunch.) Maybe water pump bearings? Or alternator? Or A/C pump?

Funny noise Number Two:

A clunk, like something slapping the body from underneath, when the driver's side front wheel drops down into droop position. The suspension flexes, the DS front wheel goes down, and "clunk".

***

What do you think? Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

#1 - loose fan belt? Does it coincide with the cycling of the A/C? Smog pump getting ready to die? Anyway you can be more specific?

#2 - possibly a broken spring, TRE or Birf?

I could listen over the phone if you like on the first noise?

the 2nd one could be many things. Maybe a spring pack is moving? ever tried greasing the springs?

On noise #1:

I replaced all the belts a few months ago. Maybe I have a loose one. I will look into that.

The A/C system was recently converted to R134 and has been cooling very nicely. I have not checked the occurrence of the noise against the A/C cycling function. I will look into that as well.

I don't have a way yet to be more specific because the noise is so strange and random.

On noise #2:

The springs are OME's less than 6 months old. I have checked and re-checked bolts to make sure I don't have something loose. But I have not looked at TRE's. I will do that.

Thanks very much for your suggestions.

Use the thumb rule on all belts...such as if you can push down on a belt and the distance is longer than the length of your thumb..it to loose...and visa versa.

ome's spring packs love to shift...try grease.

Howdy! #2 could be a spring bushing or shock bushng. If you lifted the rig, it could be a shock bottoming out if you have more droop than shock travel allows. John

If the chirp noise was predictable and consistent, I'd like to have you listen to it. Problem is, it's so danged random!

I have never greased the spring packs. I just pulled them off the shipping pallet and bolted 'em on. Hmmm. Lemme look at that.

Thanks for your help and input, here and in your other post.

I will review the shock and spring bushings. Thanks very much.

I did grease the shackles when I installed the OME's. When I said I never greased the springs, I meant that I never greased in between the leaves.

My OME's make all kinds of clunking and popping noises. They go away for awhile when I shoot some grease into the shackles and frame pins.

I thought it was the spring packs' shifting that was making noise, but after alot of trial and error, I traced it to the bushings.

My rig's making a sound like #2 because bushings on my passenger front sway bar link are toast. That will go away this weekend!

#1 along with the other stuff you've mentioned, don't overlook the idler pulley (specifically the bearing) as a potential source. Especially after a somewhat recent belt replacement. Spend some quality time with a homemade stethescope ( about 3 ft length of heater hose/ garden hose, etc) one end to your ear, and the other scanning over the various suspicious areas as the truck idles.
#2, to further add to the most likely list of offenders already covered, look at the sway bar end link bushings and shock bushings.

I had my truck changed to r134 I think it was running to much pressure in the AC system and the belt chirped/squeeled really loudly like the compressor was seizing up I brought it back to the ac shop and they did some ajustments on the high side pressure. The guy said that r134 runs a a higher pressure. I know nothing about AC.

I re-checked the belts. When I put 'em on, I tightened 'em good, but they musta stretched because they were loose. I also learned that I was not correctly using the tensioner devices.

Next day, the intermittent chirp was gone, replaced by a loud rumbling noise. I swung into the local Toyota shop. I asked the tech to gimme some free advice on the noise. While it was idling in his shop, it dribbled coolant right outta the water pump onto his floor! He stethescoped the water pump and he told me it looked like it needed a new one.

I limped it home and did about a half of the tear down. Once I had the fan outta the way, I could grab the pump shaft. Sloppier than a two year old with an ice cream cone. Its the water pump, all right.

Cam, please explain this, I'd love to get rid of those noises!

Thanks to everyone who posted on my thread.

On noise number 1, I'm gonna get a new water pump coming on Monday and get it installed.

If that solves it, it'll be on to noise number 2.

:wrench::wrench::wrench: then :steer:

I've got the greasable shackles and pins... it really seems to make a difference when I grease them. Go figure!
