I went to take the starter off so I could replace the solenoid. The bottom bolt left me stumped. I could get a socket on it, but the body protruded so I couldn't attach the socket to an extension or wrench. I tried the angle connector and still could not make it work. I then tried a cresent wrench and I could get it on, but with all the other stuff around, I didn't have enough room to move the bolt.

I thought I would spray PB Blaster and try the wrench tomorrow. Is there a better way. If I could get the socket on, it would make things a lot easier.

odd, I recall the upper nut being hard(but no biggy) to get a socket on, bottom was a piece of cake. Are you sure you trying to take the right bolt/nut off? last one I did took all of 5 min to take off and replace, used nothing fancy....just a shallow socket and wobbly

There are two bolts and the top was not a problem. I'll hit it with PB Blaster and maybe that will help me get it off.

I used a standard socket. Is that the same as a shallow?

Thanks Pimp

is it a 2f? or something else? like a 350?

Pimp -Its a 2f.

Steve- You had the same problem and went with a different starter? Which one did you replace it with.

The solenoid was bad and it was like $35 alone, whole new starter w/solenoid was around $50 at Advance Auto. Always check local parts stores first, it's amazing what they can get. I remember one of the bolts was a minor pain (bottom?) but just took a minute to work around the clearance issue.

I just had my starter go out awhile back and I did not have any problem with mine either. Just used a regular socket (17mm IIRC) with about a 6" extension on my 3/8" socket. I too got mine for about $50, but from O'Reilly's. Part number is 16224 but I don't recall the brand name. It has been working just fine for me so far.

Must be that upside down bezel getting in the way, Ken.

:flipoff2:

Thanks Dave, I'm touched you cared enough to think of me. And multiple times in the same day.

Do you own any box end wrenches?

I have not ever had a problem with R&R of a starter motor.

Is your ground lead un hooked?

Good luck!

-Steve

Sorry I can't be of more help, Ken. Don't understand what is getting into your way. Can you post a picture?

I own Box end wrenches.

My Ground is hooked up

I have a new solenoid I want to replace the one on the existing starter. Just couldn't get it off. I didn't want to break anything going at an angle. I'll get it off and replace the solenoid. Just wanted to know if anyone had a similar difficulty and what they did before I go and put muscle to it. It was near the end of the day and finished everything else I wanted to do to it.

It is a rebuilt starter (can tell by the label).

Hey this gives me an excuse to go to the store and look for some cool wrenches. I love buying new tools. My workshop improved greatly when I refinished my basement.

Thanks for all the advice. Yes, even you Dave. I'll be able to get it off next time I try.

Ken

I would unhook the groung, as to not weld a wrench to anything while playing with the positive lead to the solenoid, but that is just me.

Good luck!

-Steve

Can be a shocking experience. (Dun dat :-[)

Thanks Dave and Steve - I'm sure I'll be able to get it off. Just thought I'd test the waters some, was afraid of breaking the bolt. I of course disconnected all the wires before trying to remove it. I am an Electronics Engineer by trade, its the mechanical things that throw me for a loop

Don't have a picture, but when you put the socket on the screw, the lip of the mainbody of the starter proturudes right over the top of the socket about a third of the way. This prevents me from getting anything to attach to the socket. I can get a wrench on it, but with the other things near, there is only about 4-6 inches of play for the wrench. The bolt was in hard and I couldn't get the leverage to bust it loose.

I'll hit it with PB Plaster tonight and try again later in the week.

I have found the GearWrenches invaluable for tight spaces like that. A little pricey, but hey, I use them ALL THE TIME. 5 degrees between clicks, and all you usually need is to loosen things that much and you're off to a good start.

Where do you get these wrenches?

dude,
throw a cheater on the end of the wrench...i almost always have too after 20 some winters of road salt up north..bolts not move well with out :) wo its late...
good luck
