If you were to put a non-Diesel engine in your Toyota expedition rig, which would it be?

Is there such a beast:confused:

I'm a big fan of stock. If I were trying to build the most reliable rig, from a used base, I would rebuild the original engine. The Toyota engineers spent millions of dollars and thousands of hours designing and refining a complete system to work together, why mess with it. I'm new to the idea of Expedition but the idea seems to me to get where you wouldn't normally get to, but not someplace that is impossible to get to. The idea is reliabilty not HP right?

Indeed it is.

I love my 22R, I'm just wondering in general what gasoline engines you guys like :)

1FZ-FE

Toyota Land Cruiser engine produced from 1993 through today. I don't know if you were exclusively talking about swapping motors or just any motor in general, but I have a lot of respect for Toyota's 1FZ.

But I agree, the 22R is awesome too, having run many of them before. I can't imagine swapping anything non-toyota in there.

Of course...I'm bias.

If a 22R would move my 40 I would swap it. It is pretty much an agreed upon notion that the 22R is the best 4 banger ever built.

I would choose the 1FZ FE or maybe the carbed 1FZ sold in ME and SA.
The factory unsmogged 3F carbed engine would also be on the short list.

I am swaping a Cummins 4bt in my 80 because I want a diesel and the cummins is reliable, simple and parts are easily available, if I wasn't going with a diesel I would rebuild the stock engine: 1FZ in my case.
The 2F is also high on the list for simplicity and if you want a bit more power without compromissing reliability you can get a 2fplus: 2f bottom, 3f cylinder head and 1FZ carb.
Of course if you have a minitruck or similar the 22r is a great option, a lot more fuel efficient too.

Fernando

a 850cfm q jet carbed 454 with some work. 16lt per 100km hwy, nice small primaries, 2f reliabilty with more grunt.

was a great engine in my old 40, pushing big tyres, and wheelstands in 1st and 2nd.......

Or another turbo 1fz fe, like my old 80, 1.5 lt per 100km hwy, and 245kph in 5th gear on the limiter :D

For a Hilux Chassis, I choose the 22R

For a Land Cruiser Chassis, I would choose either the 2F, 3F, or 1FZ (all OEM carbed versions) :hillbilly:

But for Overland driving, whatever engine came with the truck as stock, would be the one to keep.

Yes, but I would want a new stock engine and not and old one like the 2F.

The older stock engines were also built to maintain a ridiculous emissions requirement and the technology sucked so they are inherently handicapped. Very low CR, small cams, poorly flowing heads and exhaust systems. Engines have gotten cleaner and less cluttered and more powerful, technology has improved. I'd get a modern Toyota engine, like the new 4.0 V6. No mods are necessary, motor is ready to go out of the box.

As someone who has to pass emission with his rig I have no more interest in maintaining the emission controls on an 80's toyota engine. Or any engine from the 80's for that matter. I have to deal with it on my current truck and there are more hose than a brothel.

I guess I will be the odd man out. I put an SBC 350 in my Piggie. One of the reasons was availability of parts in out of the way places.

Gas?...NO, I personally wouldn't want any motor with rubber or plastic inside it, F (Cruiser) or 22R/E (w/ steel guides, truck) series or nothing, if I was forced.

Aluminum doesn't like heat (emergency loss, hose burst, plastic rad top bust) and not as forgiving as iron. I don't care how good it runs on the treadmill, a.k.a american freeways ;)
confidence is knowing a service station is on the next corner ;);)

Diesel?...Yes! :D double the range (have to carry less fuel) and double the torque!... and triple the reliability.

Just out of curiosity, why would you build an expidition rig that wasn't diesel?

I feel sorry for you poor seppos :( I live in the land of diesels!

Here where I'm sitting at the office, I can see a 75 troopy (my drive to work car) a 79 troopy (heavily modified for use at work) 4x 79 traybacks and a 100 series wagon

All of these are 1hz's with the exception of my lovely old 75 which has a 2H

In town there are more diesel landcruisers than any other vehicle, and 2nd place would be to diesel hilux's :D
