Why not work with what you CAN get? It isnt that difficult to get a good diesel engine down here.
It's not legal in California.
Diesel?...Yes!double the range (have to carry less fuel) and double the torque!... and triple the reliability.
what motors you looking at?
iirc a 2f makes a few pounds more than a 2h, or at least is real close to it.
All non-turboed toyota diesels make less torque than the 2F. But add the turbo and you get more torque.
Maybe so, but find me a 2F that gets 25+ MPG? My 1HZ is just fine with that....... When I turbo it it's going to hammer that 2F AND still get 25+ MPG!
Maybe that's not a big deal now, but wait until fuel is 4.00+ dollars a gallon. That mileage difference is going mean something then......
Hey, I'm a fan of toyota diesels but the question was about torque AND this thread is supposed to be about non-diesel engines. Also, I have read on 'MUD that it is not uncommon to only get an average of 17mpg not 25+. I hope to run on WVO when I have the money to do the swap. But the 2F is a grunty engine you can lug the hell out of. It's peak torque is at 1800 rpm, which is a lower peak than any of the toyota diesels. It does give more torque than any toyota diesel engine from the same era or later (non-turbo).
I have yet to read a claim from an owner that says a turbo (or non turbo) 1HZ gets over 25 mpg.
I have heard various times that the 1HZ gets less than 20 mpg US...

different ways of meausring fuel consumption but they all work out to high teens and LOW 20s MPG U.S.
I can't imagine a heavy SOA 60 Series doing any better.
Good points. Still, B99 is at 3.00 a gallon here in my home town. As gas rises it makes things even more desireable.... Even if things were equal, the sound alone is a wonderful thing.....

Look, now that Audi has won the 24 hours of Le Manns two years in a row with a TDI, short of top fuel dragsters there is no automotive application that a trubo diesel isnt superior to a gass in!

1FZFE, no question. Iffy headgasket not withstanding.
Easily a 300,000 mile motor if cared for in a somewhat regular fashion. It also benefits from being able to pull the skin off of a custard as opposed to a 2F or 3F...
