I;m installing a Downey aluminum rad in my 40. I read somewhere on MUD that a 7-8 blade fan from a big block chev would be the best fan to use to assist in the cooling. I bought one at a wrecking yard that has a clutch on it. What is the benefit of a clutch and how to I test it to see if it's functioning properly. Also do I still need a shroud with this large fan?

I've done a search and am still not clear as to where the fan should be placed in the shroud. Not in the shroud at all, only a little inside the shroud????which will give the best results.

Thanks, Greg

I think a shroud is very important, especially if you crawl. The clutch will save you some HP as it requires less power below a certain temp. Kinda depends on your application. How do you use the truck?

A shroud is very important. Regardless of radiator, I think a fan shroud is crucial. I made one on my v8 conversion, and prior to it would run about 205ish around town, but dropped to a rock steady 180 around town.

Dunno. I've heard what Downey Jim says about having the fan positioned outside the shroud....that makes no sense to me, but I am no expert. Currently I have my fan about 1/4-3/8" inside the shroud. The stock core support gives some adjustment...like maybe 7/8" to the fore-and-aft position of the radiator/shroud.
Sorry, but I run a 2F and know nothing about V8 40's:confused:

However I do love my Blackwater polo shirt;)

At this point you're better off wearing an O.J. Simpson jersey;)

I still wear mine often along with other items. I love the controversy that it stirs up, especially around here with all the granola eaters.

I'm glad your enjoying it.
