The front bib is rusting too.

If it runs as good as the rest of it looks from your photos, and drives safe (good brakes and steering), I wouldn't have any trouble paying $15K for that - but I've always wanted a diesel Cruiser.

Being in New England would want to be sure I kept it out of the winter weather. It's had some small repairs already for rust which to me means they would come back easier. The 2B is a rarer engine than the B and 3B. What that means as far parts availability not sure. But being a JDM import has a coolness factor all it's own. Different color interior and fender mounted mirrors are unique. Living in the Southwest if I was in the market for a diesel the rust repairs wouldn't bother me. Just keep it clean and your good. Places with salt and high humidity might be different. A magnet only shows where bondo is not rust hiding. The price certainly doesn't seem out of line. Might ask a question in the diesel section about the 2B as far as what to look for and parts availability. Everything else else on the cruiser should much harder to local than any other cruiser of these age.

Thank you for the replies gentlemen. Steering and shifting are spot on. It really was a pleasure to be in. The 2b (unless I'm misinformed) has a bit more power than the 1b and 3b. I think maybe she's it....

2B is between B and 3B
(DIN is a German standard; JIS is Japanese standard)

^ That's interesting.

So Wiki is wrong then?
Toyota B engine - Wikipedia

"The 2B is a 3.2 L inline 4 eight valve OHV diesel engine. Compression ratio is 21:1. Output is 93 hp (69 kW) at 2200 rpm with 159 ft·lbf (215 N·m) of torque at 2200 rpm.

Applications

The 3B is a 3.4 L inline 4 eight valve OHV diesel engine. Compression ratio is 20:1. Output is 90 hp (67 kW) at 3500 rpm with 160 ft·lbf (217 N·m) of torque at 2000 rpm.

Applications

  • Dyna 4th, 5th, 6th generation
  • Toyoace 4th, 5th generation
  • Landcruiser 40/60/70
  • Coaster 2nd, 3rd generation"

The situation is a bit complicated.
Wiki doesn't say about Power standard.
In US (UK) there is an Imperial horsepower (hp) = 745,7 W; in other world a Metric horsepower (ps) = 735,5 W.
PLUS
There are 3 main methods to estimate power - Japanese Industrial standard (JIS); American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE); European German Deutsche Institute fur Normung (DIN). Usually JIS has Gross and Net way to measure horsepower, but gross gives the higher numbers - it is estimated without an alternator; a power steering etc. DIN is always Net and is the most conservative out of 3 mentioned.
Toyota used gross JIS around the world up to 1980 (when DIN was commonly used). After 1980 Toyota continued to use gross JIS in Japan (its better for advertising) and few other markets, but changed to DIN in other markets. Only around 1985 Toyota changed to NET JIS and DIN around the World.
So 2B diesel was never sold outside of Japan (and always had a JIS number 93), but 3B was sold outside of Japan from 08/1980 and had a DIN power 90.
Usually the difference is about 3-7 hp. In order to make it clear I made the chart above. Left scale is JIS and Right is DIN

Economist,

Thanks for that clarification. I've learned 4 things today from your information. A good day. I've saved your charts. So, the power is a bit like the value of currency (for lack of a better analogy)....A dollar here may not be the same as a dollar there...and yet it's still a dollar.

In other news, barring any unforeseen circumstances, I will hopefully have her home by next week. Fingers crossed.
