Last week I removed my factory rack before it starts to rust the roof and also because it looks crappy and is about as useful as a submarine with a screen door. To my surprise none of the nutserts are rusted!! I have filled the nutserts with with hex screws sealed with silicone and covered them with tape. I have to sand out the slight rust that the rack base made in the roof and then I'm undecided on what to do about covering the nutserts permanently. I like what Tyler has done with the Line-X and thats my favorite option I've seen so far the others are Dan's fix with the stainless rosettas and o-rings and also someones fix with the rubber washers. I'm open for any other suggestions short of welding and painting the roof which is the nicest fix but NOT removing the headliner for that! Also wanted to know how any of the mentioned fixes have held up over the years. Thanks in advance.

I just filled mine with s/s rosettes and s/s screws. You can always paint those to match.Which I haven't done yet.

Stuffed those holes full of super duper silicone.

Painted the worn spots with some Navel Jelly to prevent rust.

No fuss, no muss.

Truck is too high for anyone to see or care anyway.

Just a note my nutserts did not look like yours on my '04.

Yours actually look much stronger, mine had no metal on the top of the roof.

I used SS button head Allen screws with silicone on the threads. Nobody notices or cares as far as I know. I'll have a Heavy/Heavy kit on in the next week or so so then only Wilt Chamberlain may notice.

I was shocked myself at how thick they are. All of the posts I've seen on Mud look totally different thus probably why the others rusted. None of them were loose at all the screws backed out with almost no effort. I might just consider fixing the rust and making some rubber gaskets for the mounting feet of the rack and silicone the tops of all the other nuserts and leave the rack in place. Just a thought?

I put stainless allen head machine screws in the holes then had the whole roof done in color matched moonglow grey LineX. I had considered black (cheapest) white (traditional Land Cruiser) then settled on the color matched. Not cheap, but not as hot as black and it doesn't look like a papa FJ cruiser this way.

A couple weeks ago in Kentucky I cringed a bit when branches ran down the sides of the truck, but smiled when they went over the top.

Any pics? Cost? Sounds like a pretty good idea, especially if you're doing something like TYLER did because so much of the material is wasted.

LineX roof

Not the best pictures and the truck had 650 miles of drizzle road grime on it.
Nobody seems to notice the LineX unless I tell them it is there. I kind of like that.
