Just to make sure I understand this.
Paint the face plates yellow. Apply the decals. Paint the face plates blue. Remove the decals.
The result: Blue face plates with yellow lettering, Right?

That is correct. First color is the lettering color, second color is the face color.

Just to make sure I'm understanding this, there is a preference of some Mudders for painted gauge faces instead of vinyl.

I may have a cheaper and more flexible DIY option. I can source a masking vinyl. Basically paint the gauge face white with whatever paint you prefer, let it dry/cure, apply the mask vinyl decal(s), paint the gauge face black with your paint of choice, remove the mask decals. That way you can end up with a painted face that can be custom ordered without the upfront cost for each different configuration. (Because I have my own modular artwork for the gauges)

78GroundUp would this method work for you? I'm not saying it is perfect, but it may give you more control over the paint choice for longevity.

Absolutely an option. What I have seen, and no regrets here. It is not possible to cut the discussed vinyl to the detail needed. That's not anybody's fault. I did not even consider a reverse paint possibility. VERY GOOD IDEA! What material could be cut that would even come close to the detail. It is to my understanding - I only know what I have been told. But the screen printing process could even duplicate the TEQ in the lower left of the face plates..... That is what kind of result I am desiring.... Necessary - probably not but "IF" affordable I would consider it.

Interesting reading.
If I could do a custom speedo, say in different color from original in km/h primary scale and mph secondary, that would be interesting point.

Absolutely, you could feasible do any color scheme you wanted. ....

I will talk more with Kelli on Monday.... A very nice mudder has offered to vectorize some artwork. I will be the guinea pig for this.
From what I can tell all face plates forward (empty/full, Low/high, etc) and the five plates behind the front one..... Would be in the 150-175 range. All paint, all laid out.... As close to factory as I can tell. Finished product would be the truth??

Just to be clear here..... I am not doing any of this for profit. Not one Red cent is for me. Just wanting to find viable options for those wanting custom or restored face plates.

Once the company has the artwork..... You would clean and powder coat base plates. Send them in with what is desired. You get back your originals as printed face plates. That is how they do their aircraft clientele...

Very early in discussion will get more info on Monday....,
