First-off, obviously a newbie (poser: looked in the FAQ section 1st ;)) or just dumb. I have a 1974 FJ40. I'm assuming it's an f engine since everything's original. Am I correct on this?? Next, I've looked all over and can't find the recommended oil type to change the oil. What do you suggest, brand, filter, etc??

Also, will definately doing a power steering conversion. Which is the best for this rig and of course which is the cheapest?

change to F2 was in 75 so should be F. Go to toyota & get your oil filter. As for oil. The manual recomends API SE grade, which most any current Oil is. (7.4 qts + 1 qt for filter)10w-30, 10w-40, 20w-50. As for brands, you'll get many "opinions" on that, I have mine, just be careful, many current oils to meet Emisions, have removed the wear additives, very bad, especially for these older motors. Stay away from House brands, yes they are made by a major Brand, but additives as missing many times.

74 Engine

This is from an old Thread, where the guys learned me up on my Engine..

It's an F155, so 155hp and 230 ft-lb of torque, 2F oil system, F block, 2F head and compression. It's on the longest produced model, the 1974 Federal model from 9/73 to 12/74. Mated to the H41 Transmission, it's a damn good combination:D

Well if it is a USA truck, it will have the H42, not the H41, unless someone has installed it here...

:meh:

It's a late F engine, neither an F nor a 2F....an F.5
You really started a thread to find a motor oil? Whatever is on sale! Anything called oil that'll fill the pan will do. The f 1/2 isn't picky.
Power steering is a whole nuther thread...

I guess the reason why I asked about the oil is with other vehicles I had, the oil viscosity was critical. Being that I've never owned anything this old, I wasn't sure. Thanks for the information though

Hallmark: how can I find out what month it was made in??

I run 20-50wt year round. And that is in a realtively "new" motor. Rebuilt about 4-5K ago.

Rotella 15-40. I like the dino stuff, this is a diesel oil and has a fair amount of detergents, sulfur and zinc, to aid in lubrication of cam and lifters. good for older engines, about 12 bucks for a gallon, your need 8.5 qts of oil and a decent filter, I'd use a Napa brand filter the gold are wix filters. Be sure to replace the gasket on the oilplug (toyota dealer).

Remember it takes alot of oil 8+ qts so make sure your drain pan is big enough! Welcome to the madness! don't be afraid to ask questions if your searches come up empty handed.
