I really want to try rebuilding an engine at some point and while the current engine in our 71 FJ40 runs reliably, it has bad compression numbers, major scoring in several cylinders, and burns substantial oil when downshifting (even after replacing valve stem seals). Has anyone done a F engine rebuild recently? Pretty much all the posts I read talk about how the F engine parts are harder to come by than the 2F parts, and those posts that do talk about F engine rebuilds tend to all be 10-15 years old at this point. Are F engine rebuilds realistically possible without spending a small fortune on small batch reproduction parts anymore? I read some old posts that toyota forklifts used the F engine and had rebuild kits/parts avaliable, but I haven't found much on this with Google. Are the forklifts engines named something else? I know that most people just get the 2F engines as replacements, but I would like to keep everything all original if possible.

Depending on where in CA you're located, These are a couple of Northern CA 1F rebuilders Yota1performance in Riverbank or BTB in Reno. If you travel a little outside of Ca then Classic Cruisers in CO or Justin of Redline in CO, East I would reach out to Cam of Mosley Motors aka @FJ60Cam. All of which are great vendors/contacts too.

Yes, F parts are getting harder to come by but some of the 2F stuff can be retrofitted. You might surprised how much of the F can be saved too!

Yota1 ask for Nic, he is their resident 1F expert. I had my F rebuild a few of years ago, yes it's an investment but still less than an engine swap. I spoke to all the these builders/vendors but in the end I went with Yoda1 due mainly the recommendation of Georg aka @orangefj45 who you will find to be a "salt of the earth person"/vendor in Stockton-ValleyHybrids.

Also, Welcome to ih8mud, use the search function on here not google. There have been several threads regarding engine rebuilds on here

Most fork lifts of seen had the 2F
I have the Toyota forklift parts Catalog EPC. I’ll see if I can fire up my old windows XP machine and I snoop around and see what part numbers show up for the F and see what uesrs they used the F in. Maybe the fork lift catalog may have some info. I’ll see if the part numbers cross over to the dealer epc. Hmm.

This pic is from my jan '81 microfiche set for the US and Canadian markets from 03/69 to 07/80. Part numbers may have changed since jan '81.
