I´m about to change the body of my FJ to 100% fiberglass and because of that, I'll have to build a roll cage for it. I got a little scared after seeing this:

I've searched on this forum and found this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/252005-fj40-roll-cage-thread.html
which led me to this page: Cruiser Cages - the IH8MUD.com collection

These are very good cages, but as my FJ is going to be hard toped, I'd like my roll cage to be outside of the vehicle instead of inside it.

Well, here in Brazil, we have the "short" Bandeirante, which is just like the TLC FJ40, and we have the "long" bandeirante, which is something like the BJ45, but not sooo long (it's 1m/3feet longer then the FJ40).
I had a very good cage to put on a FJ40, but as my new TLC is longer, I think this cage will no longer be so safe.
Here are some pictures of what I was thinking before:

I'm thinking about adding a Y to the side, to have some extra strength to it, jut like this truck:

Any other suggestion/help?

The bottom picture of the Pitznuer (sp?) is a exterior rollcage.

The ones pictured on the FJ style are bars that will keep the brush off your paintjob and hold up a roof rack. They are not purpose built exo cages since they have no triangulation to them. If you roll like the top picture, the cage will flatten out and you would be pinned inside the vehicle.

Just my thoughts.

Well, the owner is a friend of mine and had already rolled with no damage at all. I don't know how bad was the roll, or if the vehicle had just fallen sideways like this picture:

But it happend...

Since I don't know much about it, could you explain this triangulation thing? What kind of triangulation could be possible on this case? What would you recommend?

a real roll

usually a real roll does damage eitherway, but being pinned is a possibility and it all depends on the roll angle..

I just say that outer cage is like coffee, dont know if i like it or hate it lol.

I think if done properly an exo cage can offer great protection in a rollover and I looked into this as I too have a fiberglass body but in my opinion they look terrible on a 40. I think the internal cages look much better and if tied to the frame offer excellent protection.

I intend to have an exo cage because of 2 thinks:

1) This is going to be my expedition vehicle. An internal cage is going to cost me some essential space inside the cab, which I don't want to loose.

2) With an exo cage, I can bolt "accessories" such as my spare tyre, the extra fuel and some other things which are too heavy to bolt on a fiberglass body.

It's not a question of look.

Where can one find more pics of Exo cages...i have looked, but nothing.

If you are going to do an exo, at least take a suggestion from the rover crowd. Build a single B pillar inside the cab and run a diagonal behind the seats. Then tie the exo into the diagonal through the hardtop. That will help considerably in the strength of the cage.

sure makes it easy to throw a roof rack on also.

I had saved some pictures of some Rover set-ups...this one below looks really clean!

I also like this 60, and this 3rd Gen 4Runner...although getting the snow off that runner must be a pain
