I've been wanting to do a run out west and think this will be a good time to do so. Right now it's in the beginning stages of planning but I'm thinking it will be a 2 week trip.

I'd like to go to Ouray and Silverton but would consider other options. This would be during summer school break.

It would be a similar trip as the South one in 2009. There will be a meeting spot out West and it's up to everyone to get there on time. Caravaning is up to individuals.

Once out there I'm hoping to camp verses staying in a hotel to help keep costs down.

I think allowing 4 days to get there should allow everyone time to make the drive out. The return trip can be at your discretion.

As before everyone is responsible for their own trucks and with this much lead time there really shouldn't be any maintenance issues for anyone.

Please feel free to post ideas and any and all trucks are welcome.

Here are the dates as planned for the trip.

It's planned for a two week trip from 7/23/11 to 8/7/11 that's Saturday to Sunday.

We have reservations for the following dates

7/26/11-7/30/11
comfort Inn
Ouray CO

7/30/11-7/31/11
Best Western
Bryce Canyon UT

7/31/11-8/4/11
Holiday Inn Express
Moab UT

As an FYI, these hotels allow you to reserve a room and cancel that reservation up to the day you check in without penalty.

This doesn't mean that people need to follow our lead but to let people know what our plans are and anyone can join us.

The days outside these reservations are being used for travel out and back. If people want to travel with us we can pick a convenient hotel along the route to meet at and then caravan from there on.

dude, you just named the two BEST places to go in the WINTER! Ouray has the most epic ice climbing (and one of the largest Ice climbing festivals). Silverton Mountain has the most amazing skii/snowboarding terrain in the west. It has one lift, and a heli...that's it. EPIC.

So, if you change the trip to winter, I'm in. Not to mention, Moab is about 4 or 5 hours from Ouray. March is great time to go west...Good riding, and a the best time to hit Moab (70degrees during the day, 30-40 at night)

One last thing...I have a friend in Grand Juntion CO who was on the Trail team, and could lead a group through Moab and the surrounding areas. He knows the trail very well (His name is Chris Nelson)

IF you need an info/help with planning, let me know...

I've been wanting to make a trip out there for a while so count me in as a tentative. Would have to be mid to late July and maybe into the first week of August to fit into work and my kids school schedule unless I get lucky enough to be laid off with a nice severence that summer. :grinpimp:

Had a blast with you guys in the now closed holy land last time.

Gives us a year to buy a newer truck! Great area Rick, tons of stock friendly trails
right in that area. Durango is just south of there and it's a pretty cool place to visit.

Our neighbors are from Durango and keep trying (half-jokingly) to move back there with them, they love that area.

I'm actually targeting June 1 to be self-employed, so summer is great. That will give me time to get the 80 up to snuff and find a good co-driver (I doubt the family will come that far for that long).

this is definitely going to be a summer trip and will avoid school for the kids. So those with families that want to go I'll need to know when we can expect everyone to be out of school. I'd like to go as early as possible to avoid as much summer heat as we can.

Steenh, we had a blast with you guys last year and say hi to Linda and the family for me.

Rick,

As we talked about the other night at my house, Erin, the kids, and I would really like to do this trip.
I may have to think about putting that V8, I have sitting in the garage, into the truck.

Steenh, I think that it would be great if you and the family could make it.

Lane,

I could tow you, but it would make for one long trip.
May be if we weld the two trucks together we could make some good time out and back.

Would be in for this. 2002 was the last time I wheeled the trails around Ouray. I agree with the length...you want to get a good week's wheeling for the 8 days of traveling. However, the scenery looks way similar after three days around Ouray. Perhaps a side trip such as Kokopelli and Moab would round things out.

Remember that FJCruiserForums is holding their huge event this year on July 21-25 and they pretty much own the town. Hitting Ouray anytime prior to late July and you run the risk of trails still be closed due to snow.

Rick, I still have my Colorado Gazateer and Colorado Trails Guide book from that trip.

Just talked to Linda and got the thumbs up. She said she'd only be able to make it a week (I'll work on that or buy her a plane ticket home) so it is looking very good for us.

I lived in Montrose when I was 4-5 and remember going to Telluride for the 4th of July celebrations... great memories. Amazing I remember more from living there at 4-5 than I do from most of my 20's :grinpimp:

We might be in for a MOAB trip, I have been wanting to go back out there since I went 2 years ago. The CON is only a few more hours (13 or so) and would alow for another 2-3 days of wheeling.

Might give me enough of a nudge to pay off my CC"s and buy that new superduty I have been wanting...

Moab seems to be about 4 hours from Ouray and definitely too close to pass up. Even if we where to identify a few more spots it would be nice to include them if possible.

I figure we really don't need to be locking down the trails until Nov. 2010 so we have time to make reservations and such.

But everyone who thinks they might be interested needs to get moving on prepping your trucks. This isn't a FG where last minute hodge podge fixes are going to get it done. Start by identify what is broken, leaking and in need of maintenance. Then prioritize them by budget or time and start getting a schedule together.

Mechanical failures is likely the biggest trip killer out there.

Whats up fellas?

Im with steenh as a pretty solid tentative :D

Would love to head back that way. Lived in Deckers (BFE) colorodo for a year in 2000 and moved my girlfriend out to Ft. Collins in 2004 and never made it myself somehow ( oops )

OldeNorthStateCruisers has a westward trip in the makings for this year (con vs moab) so that is about all that would influence my trail opinions and that pesky budget thing.

Since youll be sporting a turbo by then I think you need to step down from the 4.88s and pass them along to someone in need :hhmm:
