I’ve been tracing down the sound of this squeak or whistle, and I think I’ve got the belts ruled out. The note is much more apparent under the vehicle. It’s more high pitched and prominent off video, in person, but I think this captures it.

Is this a normal 3FE engine sound? What is that high pitched squeak / squeal that is only really apparent at idle?

(Sorry, only way I can get this up is a link to the video)

It doesn’t sound like an exhaust leak to me. It sounds mechanical

Mine's got a... let's say "non-standard" belt arrangement to remove an accessory that wasn't contributing to the health of the engine.

I hear what ya'll are saying, sounds mechanical... I am struck by the location of the sound though. It just sounds so much stronger under the truck and on the drivers side, more to the back where the exhaust was. Is it possible the throw out bearing could be squeaking? There is no change when the clutch is pushed in.

I went over all the pulleys with the screwdriver -> ear trick to see if I could hear anything and I didn't hear the squeak. I hear an idler pulley making a little bit of a grinding sound, so I'm going to swap that out but I don't think it's the cause of the sound I'm hearing outside the car.
