I recently purchased a 2013 GX460 and it appears to have what I assume are cats attached to each exhaust manifold, and downstream are two more on each bank. Are some cats while the others are resonators?

Interesting. I noticed there are oxygen sensors after the first cat in each side but no second oxygen sensor after the second cat. Was looking into Brockett Built exhaust and wasn’t sure which way to go.

I think that 4 cat/no O2 sensor trailing the last cat is typical tech. Brockett looks interesting!

The OEM Toyota cats are very high-quality and high-flow. However, as indicated above, the two cats in the Y-pipe are downstream of the O2 sensors. Removing them will not trigger any O2 sensor codes but may cause issues with visual or tailpipe emissions inspections if you have those in your area. If not, it should be no big deal. Also, your downstream cats may be worth $400-700 in salvage value.

The Brockett Y-pipe does look pretty awesome and is reasonably priced. I may consider the catted version for my GX470, which selling my old cats would cover half of. However on a GX460, I am not sure you would get much of a performance gain due to the very restrictive OEM exhaust manifolds. I have headers on my 470, so other downstream exhaust upgrades have resulted in extra power.

What headers did you go with?

Doug Thorleys. They are 470-only. I am not aware of anyone making headers for the 460.

Just curious, did you wrap them for underhood heat management? Or maybe they are ceramic coated, and that's enough?

They are 304 stainless and ceramic coated inside and out. Zero issues with underhood heat. And they look great nearly 3 years after the install.

I removed my resonator and just add a down/side pipe right after the cat. I needed to do this because I'd destroyed 2 resonators off roading in rock gardens and needed to get the to end in front of the rear axle.
I barely hear any extra noise with out it. The only time it's noticeable is when I'm coasting/engine braking, there will be a little more drone than when I had the resonator. But highway speeds, cruising speeds, or just any other type of driving, never really notice it not being there.

No but it certainly helped. I ran it on the stock tune for over 2 years. It has even more power with a YotaWerx tune on it.

Did the Careless Y-Pipe eliminate the 2nd set of cats, or keep them? Did you scan for codes after the CEL?
It did… sorry, post should’ve said “cat-less”. Scanned codes and it was O2 sensor lean… forgot which bank though. Didn’t really matter… the highway drone was enough to make me promptly take it back off. Broke one of the studs off the drivers side cat taking it off… not a fun weekend.

Well gents, my Brockett Built resonated Y-pipe arrived today! Before and after sound clips coming soon. Planning to record sound from drivers seat at start up and run, as well near front right tire and rear right tire.
Didn't recieve it without picture proof!!
