A while back there was alot of talk around here about getting the low-hanging catalytic converters turned for more clearance. I talked to a local exhaust guy about this and he said he could do it easily, but could just as easily put some new units in that would take less space anyway. I would look into replacing the stock muffler too, since it is also huge and hangs down pretty far.

I wonder about the ability of the ECU to deal with different cats and other exhaust components. The guy tells me it would work fine, but :confused::confused:

Any input?

FWIW, a friend of mine had the cats replaced on his '97 with a single generic unit. He also replaced the rest of the exhaust system except for the Y pipe. I don't think he has had any trouble since then but I will check with him again.

If you are noise sensitive than you may reconsider or at least be prepared to change it again. I've rehashed this multiple times only to find the stock exhaust was the best as far as performance and sound. If you are doing it for clearance only, than you can gain quite a bit by modding the exhaust and cats.

there are no sensors etc downstream of the cats/muffler (at least on my '93), so aftermarket exhaust from the cats back won't affect anything with the computer etc.

there is on a 95 though cruisin'. One upstream sensor and one downstream of the cats. I cut and turned my cats which made a really dramatic diffrence in clearance.

Any noticeable increase in floor temps?

I replaced the two cats on my 95 with one generic one and it worked fine. No codes or anything.

Not at all.
cut n turn mod 001 (Small).webp
cut n turn mod 002 (Small).webp
cut n turn mod 004 (Small).webp

Thanks for the replies.

I like those sliders Mr. Jungle. Is your truck lifted?

This cat project is part of my plan to maximize protection and clearance without a lift and with minimum weight gain. Eventually I probably will lift it, but not until its DD duties are no longer needed.
