I have an 1983 FJ40, and I’ve been dealing with a fuel issue for the last year. It started cutting out, and missing when running at the top end in 4th gear, and then it would gradually cut out completely, I could usually start it again eventually and nurse it home by feathering the throttle, and give it a bit of a rest, though one I had to be towed home. It’s most common going uphill when in sucking the most gas. There was no dimming of the lights indicating an alternator/solenoid problem, so I assumed it was fuel/carburetor related. I’ve pumped the fuel out, and filled it with fresh fuel wondering if there was water in the fuel. I’ve replaced the fuel filter, and then the fuel pump, I’ve also sprayed down the carburetor with cleaner. The problem seemed to get better, but still exists. Then it dawned on me when I had it smogged a couple years ago, they said I needed I new gas cap. Not wanting to wait to order one, I picked up one at Napa. After reading the forums related to this issue, that when I pull the gas cap, I often have a lot of negative gas pressure (vacuum) in the tank, which led me to ordering an OEM Cap, which I put on today. I drove it for probably 45 minutes. It felt fine, then I hit the very steep hill to my house which I have to take in second gear, and it started missing a bit again when floored, but never shut down. When I got home I pulled the gas cap, and there was still a bit of negative pressure in the tank. I then pulled off the gas cap, and went back down the hill and back up twice with no gas cap, the first time, it didn’t miss at all and felt great, the second time it may have missed a bit, but to a much lesser extent than it had in the past. I assume that might be related to the EVAP canister, but before I go down that rabbit hole, I thought I’d reach out for any other thoughts. Thanks for the help.
