Hi guys, any one got any segestions for an easier engine swap for a lj78 with thec5 speed manual in it, ive been havine problems since i got it and are pretty well sick of my 2lte, i need a repalcement that can hopefully use the same trans and doesnt involve alot of fabrication of mounts and such forth.

Thanks

Your best bet , I think , is to go towards a HZ1 , or even better HD-T engine.
However , you will certainly need to change the motor mounts , and check if your gearbox is compatible.
As well as the final ratio is right for the whole drive chain .
You may also look for a nice 6 cilinder fj option , but on this I do not have experience .

I replied about this in your other thread with a bunch of engine ideas. One thing to note with the 6 cylinder diesels is you will need to change the front end of your prado out for a heavy duty front end (longer). Also, be ready to put out $5000-10000 for one of those motors. And they'll still need maintenance on top of that. If you're looking for a more economical option, you might want to go with a 3B diesel, or a gasser swap such as the 5VZFE.

The 3L will be the easiest. I guess the 5L the same.

This might be crazy, but what about the VW 1.9 TDI? I have seen them converted to standalone (still runs an ECU but doesn't require the whole wiring harness, ignition, cluster, etc.) for about $2000 USD. A moderate tune will deliver ~120hp and 230lb-ft, and I would imagine a significant mpg increase.
I know there are kits available to bolt them up to '90s Toyota pickup transmissions (W56 and A340), is the bolt pattern for a 2L-TE different from a 22RE? How difficult would it be to bolt one to an R151?

For ease of swap and reliability I would go with a 22r/re. There are high performance longblocks available along with numerous upgrades to increase hp.

Need more torque. 22RE is fine for a 3800lb 2nd gen 4Runner, but not a 4800lb Cruiser.

More torque, wonder why toyota put the 2L/2L-T in there in the first place? Ever heard of a RJ77? My point is the 22R series of engines have Numerous more options in regards to power upgrades of the stock configuration and are know to be very reliable.

Yeah, I hear where you are coming from, and I also like the 22RE. But as I have experience with both motors, I can tell you a 22RE would way slower than a 2LTE in a LJ78. Yes I've heard of the RJ77, and everyone who talks about them says they are ridiculously slow and hard on fuel. 22RE is good on fuel until it's overworked, which it would be constantly in a landcruiser.

My parents owned a 2nd gen 4Runner back in the day. And I can tell you my auto LJ78 is much faster at 25 years old than their manual 4Runner was when it was only 5 years old. Yes the 22RE makes a bit more hp, but the 2LTE makes a lot more torque. Torque is what you need in these vehicles. A 22RTE turbo would be ok, but the cost/complexity/age just is not worth it compared to a motor like the 5VZFE or 1UZFE.

22RE makes 138lb/ft torque. 2LTE makes 177lb/ft torque. With a few modifications the 2LTE makes well over 200lb/ft. Mine is making 180lb/ft to the wheels at the moment, which is what a stock 12HT puts to the wheels. Maybe 220lb/ft at the flywheel? Just need good exhaust, intercooler and some tuning to achieve that.

Would a 1 or 2KD work?

Yes, but would be expensive to get one, and the wiring is tough. 1KD-FTV is the unit to go for. The 2KD-FTV is known to be pretty gutless. To be honest this is my dream upgrade for my LJ78. Would love to do it, but the budget is too tight at the moment.

The 1KD block is the same as the 1KZ block, so it actually would bolt into a KZJ78. LJ78 would need different engine mounts however.
