My 2003 lc runs amazing at 164000. But my engine light came on and i thought the exhaust just got a bad whiff, i thought i was right when i started it and the light was not on anymore. It came back on and off for about 2 weeks. i regret waiting so long but going to school full time and working full time i had no chance but to wait. I got it scanned today and he said it was PO420(somthing like that) to do with the cats. What should i do? how much are good ones. thanks

I'd make sure that the code really is exactly. Sounds like something with your catalytic system, most common is the oxygen sensors. Very rare for a catalytic converter to go bad unless you've ignored a bad o2 sensor for a long time and have fouled the material in the cat.

You have four oxygen sensors, two in front of the catylitic converters and two behind them, the P0430 and P0420 codes are the oxygen sensors behind the cat's, P0420 is drivers side, P0430 is passenger side.
Replace both rear oxygen sensors, buy them off of eBay, you can get two for $50.
The rear O2 sensors do nothing more than tell the computer if the cat's are working or not, that is literally all they do, so cheap ones are all you need.
You will also want to get new studs, the rear O2's mount to the exhaust via a flange instead of screwing in like the fronts do.
You will need four 8x1.25 studs that are 38mm long and nuts for those studs. Plus you will want high temp anti seize for the studs and nuts.
I bought my O2's on eBay for $40, studs and nuts at the auto parts store for $10 and the anti sieze for $10 at the auto parts store.

Front and rear O2's are the same, you can put the new O2's int he front and move the fronts to the rear.

My check engine light did the same thing, frequent short trips (1 mile and under) and the CEL would come on, then it would reset after several longer trips (20 mile commute). I then watched the O2 voltage with my live data OBDII scanner and saw that the passenger O2 was slow to wake up, which is why I kept getting the code on short trips.

You have the exact same problem, replace both rear O2's (ones failing the other is soon to follow) and you'll be fine for another 100k.

when my check engine light comes on the vsc off and vsc trac lights both come on, but when my engine light does turn off after a 10-20 miles those lights turn off as well.
