Hi all,
Just got a HDJ101 Sahara 2003 with 150.000 kms on it for a really good price. Other than intermittent starting problem and transmission solenoid fault the truck is in flawless condition.
The engine starts fine, even single crank when still cool, but after being driven for about an hour and things get hotter the truck won’t start again if the engine is turned off. I have to wait for 1-2 hrs before it would start again.
I have played around with the EFI/ECD relay and fuse, bypassing direct power from batt + to EFI/ECD but it still won’t start when still hot/warm. Starter crank and turn the engine very strongly no problem.
What could be the problem? Just like always Toyota tech from stealerships told me it’s the fuel pump (most expensive = most profit) which I think is a load of bollocks since the engine is super healthy, powerful, very responsive and doesn’t drip/seep a drop of fuel. I have more than one cruiser with 1HD-FTE and this one is actually the most responsive and powerful when running properly compared to my other 1HD-FTE.
Thanks in advance for any advices

How do I test the fuel pump without special calibration equipment? Is it possible for a broken fuel pump to still deliver good performance?

Thanks!!

Crank position sensor? Not too familiar with that model but with a regular gas engine that's where I'd look.

Problem fixed. I redid the EFI/ECD relay wiring with all 10ga wires, solder them all up, buy new EFI/ECD relay and now she would start in any conditions hot or cold. Single crank!!!

Weird..... It happens again.... I have tested the supposedly fixed problem enough, 3 times I drove around for about 40 mins in which would normally causes the problem. No problem at all so assumed things are fixed. I then took a 900km road trip immediately with the cruiser and engine stalled after about 200km. This time the engine stalled when I was positioning the truck to park, fortunately it stalled on a gas station parking yard. I am stuck here now waiting for the engine to cool down and try again.

I agree, I will get a new one after I manage to get out of this mess. I am also suspecting coolant temperature sensor, in 1HD-FTE engine coolant temp sensor also affect fuel injector and the problem only appear when things are hot. The PO used tap water instead of Toyota red coolant so obviously the whole things are full of deposits and brown slime and I bet the coolant temp sensor is also full of deposits and slime... Do you agree with my hypothesis?

Various posts from other forums also pointed spill control valve as a common cause for stalling 1HD-FTE
