Dad just bought a 2021 LC. Arrived this week. Said the engine braking is a little aggressive. I drove it yesterday. Only thing I noticed was slowing down from 2nd into 1st, feeling a little "kick" in the brake pedal. My law partner owns a 13' LC that I drive frequently and never noticed that. Didn't know if this is common, or just a part of breaking the new transmission in. Search didn't yield any results on point. Thoughts?

The 8 speed in the ‘21 may feel different than the 6 speed in the ‘13 to you. Lots of folks have reported an aggressive 1-2 and 2-1 shift in the 8 speed, especially when cold. Let it learn your dads driving style for a bit and enjoy that new ride!

I am going to assume your Dad’s definition of engine braking is removal of foot from gas pedal and LC slowing down due to loss of bang at end of squish cycle in engine. Modern automatics do seem to produce some engine braking. Many autos come with lockup options for torque converter. My 2016 LC with 8 speed will start slowing down faster than I thought it might. However, I do not think it has lockup option. I not sure if this really engine braking or just brick in air drag issue. Previous Honda Pilot produced almost no engine braking. Our Infiniti G37 with 7 speed produces engine braking almost on par with manual something about lockup feature in automatic. However, nothing engine brakes like my 3.4v6 in T100 hooked up to 5 speed manual. Take foot off gas in that and its kind of like pressing the brake a little. I enjoy down shifting to slow down before ever really apply brakes.

I'd chalk it up to learning a new car. I find going into other cars, that there indeed is some less engine braking. Just got a loaner, a brand new '21 GX460 a few weeks ago, and it had less. Nevermind sedans that feel like they just coast with the wind, at least to me coming from the LX. Part of it IMO is due the large displacement motor. Not a bad thing when you're towing a big trailer as that engine braking earns its keep.
