I have a 275k 99 lx470 that has had a good maintenance history but she's in need of a refresh. The timing belt is due (75k miles currently), and the steering pinion slowly leaks. I am not sure if the exhaust manifold leaks, how would I test that or know? The o2 sensors have all been changed, the undercarriage exhaust system has been replaced w new oem by po, but I still get a code thrown every few hundred miles for p0430.

So, since there is currently a good sale I am going to order everything necessary to refresh the engine. If I am missing anything here, please let me know! I plan to revisit this post in a couple of days and add in part numbers to stay organized.

Here is a post I am using as a jumping off point : 100 series timing belt replacement. - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/100-series-timing-belt-replacement.1255159/

Specifically:
"I would replace T-belt, it's two pulleys, its tensioner and water pump.
I would replace fan bracket, if it doesn't pass inspection. Fail is: "Any" oil on back seal, "any" play in shaft, or "any" sound when spinning shaft.
I would replace fan belt tensioner, if sound from it's pulley bearing or tension return spring weak.
I would replace any vacuum lines that are loose or cracking, and PCV valve if needed.
I would drain coolant from block and blow out coolant system. Replacing 4 gal of coolant, heater tees, thermostat and rad cap, with all Toyota OEM.
I would replace spark plugs and replace coil boots and seals. Nice to, time these with T-belt services each 90K mile."

In addition to that, the intake manifold gaskets look like they need to be redone.

As noted I want to order the steering rack -- what else do I order with that? Tie rod ends?

When i am in this far, should I go ahead and replace the starter? There isn't any documentation on it having been replaced.

The power steering system does have a slight whine to it, should I consider refreshing that now and what would that look like? The hoses look original.

Any other items I should consider adding to this list?

The sales have been pretty frequent this year. Seems like every couple of months. Won't be surprised to if another one (or two) pop up for the upcoming holidays.

All this to say, No need to empty your wallet all in one shot. Take it easy - one project at a time. Especially if you have not owned the vehicle for long enough to get some confidence in owning over the long haul. Fixing all that at once and then selling you are not going to get your money back out of it.

I definitely appreciate that perspective! Honestly for my home mechanic work, I've found that the expense of parts is less severe than the cost of my time and carving out space to do the work. In general for my own piece of mind I like doing preventative maintenance. I have accepted the financial realities of owning this and spending more on the vehicle than its worth. I don't drive much but when I do it's a cross country road trip from Portland, OR to Detroit, MI and back, camping along the way.

So if I am going to open this up, the additional thousand dollars I might spend in part is worth me not having to do it again any time soon. I took it on a 1,500 mile shakedown trip to get a handle on the issues, which is how I came up with this list so far.

In any case thanks for the dialogue and I will write more as I try to get a list of all the small parts and part numbers. If anyone has any of that compiled anywhere, that would be great!

Leaking exhaust manifolds typically tick upon acceleration. Replace with stock ones and you will likely have the same problem later down the road. Doug Thorley headers are a better option, especially considering how labour intensive the job is. Buy once cry once.

I have looked into those and when I do the manifolds I will probably go down that road.

In terms of jobs I feel as though I have to do:
timing belt / water pump and everything related
steering rack / pinion
manifold gaskets

things i think may make sense to do at that time:
power steering hoses / reservoir?
starter (since I'm in so deep)?

things I will probably punt on unless convinced otherwise:
exhaust manifold

if theres anything i should take a good look at or consider in addition to this, I'm all ears!

I’d do the starter if it’s never been done, if it doesn’t need valve cover gaskets it will before long so I’d do those.
