From what little I know, I would add to just avoid welding using deep cycle batts, if it's not apparent to everyone.

I don't remember the physics of it but deep cycle battery plates are designed for long slow discharge/charge cycles. Starting battery plates are designed for rapid discharge/charge cycles. Thats why you should use a starter battery if you want an aux battery for winching and a deep cycle for running a fridge.

Optima use to have a good explanation on their site but I can't find it. I do see that they now offer a dual use battery, starter/deep cycle.

up-date

i shortened the cable to about 20' used cable connecters for reconnecting, the male post on the cable connecters i attached battery post terminals.

will be purchasing welding goggles which take up less space.

this kit is cheap and easy to make and does not take up much space in your cruiser, but could pay off big time in an emergency.

Now THAT my friends is some good ol' fashioned C - A - N - A - D - I - A - N welding: outside, in the snow, in a good bush jacket, and some Sorells - I love it!

here's an interesting link on making nicer welds with a battery setup

regarding the welding goggles, I wouldn't go that route because A/the mask gives you protection from flying sparks and stuff, and B/ a lot of welding goggles aren't rated (dark enough) for arc, more for oxyacetelyne/plasma cutting, maybe some are, I'm not sure. this is a better setup if you are looking to save space and they can be had pretty cheap

You can weld with hanger wire, but it won't hold for long. The wire looks good melting into the puddle, but it creates a brittle, porous, weak weld that will usually break before you put your junk away. Using good rod is the only way to go.
