Hey kids,

As anyone here installed, or thought about installing, a remote-controlled air intake shut-off valve?

It turns out they're required near drilling operations, oilsands operations, etc.

You could install a butterfly valve in the intake and rig it so you can pull a knob or lever in the cab.

My '97 Cummins in Fort Mac has a positive air shutoff, and seemed a straight forward mount to the intake. When i was on the drilling rigs, the "push" didn't care much about personal trucks having them, just needed to park near the entrance to the leases. Good to see another Cruiser in the "Patch", my little HJ60 represented well, pulled a few domestics out of greassy rig roads.
Good luck!
Dan

Hey Rigpig,

Did you have a commercially available version, like the 'rigsaver', or did you have a butterfly valve? I'm thinking a home-jiggered valve would work fine, but would the safety-dude agree?

Yeah, got it from a truck shop in the Mac. That way there was a reciept of a properly manufactured one:rolleyes: ..., and the site safety (and insurance)guys are happy. And its funny cause some heavy duty mechanics would say to never use it cause it could damage engine internals such as valves etc... and others say no worries. Depends on who you talk to i guess without first hand experience...
Good luck!
PS: where you working?
Cheers
Dan

If you have a 13B-T in your 74 I believe that it already has one. I could be wrong but after looking at my unit it appears as though these engines shut themselves off by simply cutting off the air supply to the engine. I am not sure if the fuel is also cut off. Some of the more technical guys should be able to tell you. Check it out first before you spend money on the damn postive air shutoff that all the companies seem to require. I always figured that if there is enough gas in the air to rev up your desiel than it would be a good thing to get the hell out of there really fast. Just show the useless safety hand under your hood and he will have a heart attack and then just let you go since he will have no clue what he is looking at. Good luck man.

It's a 13B-T, which is new to me. I thought only the 3B had the butterfly valve - but I guess I'll have to actually look.

Or, as you suggest, I could go the 'dazzle them with bull s#!t' approach. That probably would work!

This is all in preparation for a winter full of Ft.Mac work...

Shinny, i'm heading back up there next week. PM me when you get up there and we'll hook up for a couple pints... Not much else to do in the Mac...

thinking of putting one of these in my hdj81 PH1 PowerHalt Air Shut-off Valve - 2.5" Universal | Pacbrake - https://pacbrake.com/product/c50147-ph1-powerhalt-air-shut-off-valve-2-25-generic/

It doesnt have a existing shutter? My 13BT and 1HDFTE both have intake shutters from factory.
12HT and 13BT have them from factory, I'm not sure about 14BT, 15BT etc. 1HDT definitely doesn't have and from memory FT doesn't either. Interesting that the FTE has one.

That's really awesome. Please update us if you do that. I've been thinking about this for awhile now. In the meantime, I'll continue to use my rag-stuff-intake method to suffocate it.
I've got a quote on this and I'm going to be ordering comming Monday.

I already have a front mount intercooler so I'm just going to splice into my intake tube bead roll and plop this into place.
I need to figure out what length cable I would want.

if anyone is wondering which parts I went with:

PART# C50147 - 2.50" Valve
PART# C50115 - 2.5" Mounting Kit
PART# C50030 - Pull Cable 8FT

I’m excited my shut-off valve came in.
2.5” was the right size for me to adapt to my intercooler pipes.

I'm glad I spent the money to get the right parts to do this. quality is top-notch from PacBrake and also the valve is way thicker and it seals much better than the idea I had using a universal throttle body. I can close the valve and do a boost leak test from the turbo inlet. I found some boost leaks so new clamps are in order :)

link to my previous idea.
