this is a link to external shunt ammeters up to 300 amps

But I understand wanting to keep the OEM gauge functioning

What I am wondering is if there is a way to install an external shunt, then to modify the internals so that the meter reads 1/4 of the actual output making it a +120 to -120 amp mete. In other words the gauge reading times 4. keeping the OEM gauge operating would be a plus. I'd have to think that through with a schematic in hand

but to get you up and running you could plug in one of these external shunt type ammeters. With the external shunt you are not running all that amperage into the cab

or you could bypass the ammeter and install a voltmeter instead

check out the FAQs for the volt vs Ammeter arguement

for function I am on the ammeter side of the argument but I see there are good points to the voltmeter too but I don't want to start that argument in your thread! Someone in the FAQs noted that that horse has been beaten to a greasy spot! Go the the FAQs with that argument!:lol:

I haven't been inside a cruiser amp meter, but it pretty much has to have an internal shunt. If so, you can remove the shunt (or cut it) and use the fusible link as an internal shunt. Moving the attachment point for the meter wires can adjust the sensitivity of the meter. The closer the wires are on the shunt, the higher the amps needed for full scale deflection of the meter.

distrib

Jim Chenoweth on Land Cruiser Distributors

here is a good discussion of the distributors----all of the different types with pics by jim c and also a related fuel prob

I am not sure you could have the "wrong" distrib if it is set up and functioning correctly if it is not ported and the carb is that would mean just capping the carb port I think

For example a vacuum retard distrib would just retard the timing to function properly with the given rpm whereas a vacuum advance distrib would advance it to accomplish the same thing

anyway you could search and look at the FAQs or pull up FJ40Jims posts on Distrib--he knows em all;)

Thank You!! Works now!!
