Electric Winch Question

i keep seeing pictures of cruisers with snorkels and winches. are all of these hydraulic winches? seems to me that if you brought the water level up to the headlights, the winch electronics would be submerged causing irreparable damage. if you're gonna cross a river, do you disconnect the winch?
 
You can move the solenoid pack to the upper part of the passenger side firewall. Some people put the solenoid pack in the glove box but you shouldn't have that much current flowing behind the firewall. It depends also on how well sealed your electric motor is. Most winches are electric not hydraulic. But if you don't turn on the winch, then you should just be able to let it dry out before using it. If you want to use it while crossing, then you need to move the solenoid pack and also seal the electric motor as best you can.
