Has any electric winch owner ever encountered a problem where the winch will not spool out and release a heavy load?

I pulled mine apart the other night to better figure out the inner workings.

I found a couple of things, Firsty the side flange of the drum was buckled and has been rubbing on the end housing, this may have been binding. so a big spanner bend that straight again.

Second is that when in reverse the brake works on a cam to release the brake disks. The text in the brake surfaces on in mine are still readable so there is no question about them being warn out. I did note some minor rough spots on the brake cam spline so dressed these with a stone just incase they are binding and not letting the brack release. Through a bit of playing I did find that if you simulate a heavy load on the drum, by holding the shaft with a big set of pipe pliers, the cam will actually push out enough to force the two aluminium ends apart laterally. If this was to happen it may cause binding of the drum to the housings and lock it up even tighter. The extend of the movement would be be a function of the stifness of the winch mount. My is a folded bit of 6mm plate and I would be very surprised if it had any flex, but there may be floex in the aluminium housings?

I have seen a couplle of these winches with a tie bar installed across the back between the aluminium ends, much like the tie bars on most planetary winches. This may have been to restict the lateral spread? I think I'll add something similar.

I'll put it back on and give it anouther go before binning it and replacing it with something else in the 9-12k range.
