So I was outside hosing off the fj80 (1996) and found some mud under the hood.

I sprayed the stuff off, and now I'm misfiring. I've checked the distributor and it's dry, so I'm not sure what's up. This happened once before and it cleared up on it's own, but this time I need the rig for work in the AM. I'm an idiot for spraying it off again, but I figured these things were water tight.

Anyone else have this happen?

Water in spark plug hole?

If your plug wires are old, it can arc out the wire due to the water on them. This is quite noticable at night and makes a nice light show. If it's dark outside (or you can make it dark in a garage), pop the hood, start the engine, and look for any arcing.

Well... not much of a firework display, but I must say that if I ever run into you guys, I'm gonna be out quite a few beers because I owe a 12 pack by now.

I checked for spark, but most everything was pretty dry so I figure the arc wasn't happening. So, I pulled off the plug caps and shot a good amount of air in each hole. Found my 6th plug leaking a bit of oil to boot, so I tightened the plug. Well, fired her up and purred like a kitten. THANKS!

I figure you guys saved me 90 bucks for an hours tech time. Now if you can tell me how to shut off the "check engine" light... ; )

There's been at least one similar previous thread in which the problem turned out to be water in the TPS connector.

Good luck, and let us know,

Curtis

If you go to Harbor Freight and buy the $40 Creader, you can pull codes and turn off the light. There are other reaaders as well, I just don't remember them off the top of my head.
