Hi,
Just re-starting my thread regarding EGR. Following on from the fact that i couldn't locate the EGR on my '83 FJ60 2F, I am now confident that it either never had one or has been removed. The side of the engine block under the exhaust manifold is bare. So i'm back to hunting down the cause of my unstable idle. I feel like i have checked everything that i can think off (new plugs, leads, new points, timing, cleaned carby, idle mixture, valve adjustment, fixed manifold leak, vacuum hoses, new secondary diaphragm). Runs alot better but still a fluctuating idle. Is it possible that the cause of this may be the incorrect removal of emission gear or EGR? Not sure how much emission stuff these Australian models had from factory. I can see one remnant of something - there is a black hoses coming from LH front fender area that points up into the engine bay and has a rubber bung in the end of it. Maybe was part of EGR system? Anyway i have read alot about desmogging and it confuses the hell out of me and also generally relates to US models. Are there any things I should specifically check that could be causing my fluctuating idle?

is it pulsing up and down quickly? is the ac button pushed in? if so you just might need to adjust your ac idle. front screw on your carb facing the front of the motor.

I posted this earlier, but I guess it got lost...You can look up you car on OpenX in the parts reference section. Enter in your VIN and you can then see what parts were offered. In general the EGR was not installed on an early 80's FJ60 built for the Australian market. So I don't think anything is missing from your truck, at least not the EGR.

If you can, post up a picture of your engine bay, especially the left-hand side (side with the intake/exhaust manifold). It will be difficult to tell you what the loose hose is without a picture.

As near as I can tell the only emissions you should have is a PCV valve, a choke opener, and a charcoal canister. Compared to a US spec 2F, I would consider this a "factory desmog".

Cheers, thanks for re-posting. I will take a photo and put it up after work cause now i'm curious what that hose is. What you said sounds plausible about the Aussie models. The last diagram matches the set up on my car. The thing that hangs off the carby... could it cause me any probs? Only reason i ask is that the secondary diaphragm was cracked and that thing looks similar but you don't seem to be able to open it like the secondary.

Don't think the A/C up is responsible because on my truck there is an "idle-up" switch on the dash which if turned off stops the A/C idle up from engaging.

Oh, the other thing i forgot to mention is that there is a frequent crackling noise coming from the canister (vapour escaping?). It's quite audible (first time i heard it i thought it was an electrical short), is this normal?

Hi,
I have attached a couple of photos of the hose i was referring to.

Thanks

Do or did you have headlight washers? It might be the feed hose to those. Otherwise, have you crawled under the truck to see what the other end is connected to?

Hi yeah, sorry for being stupid. Upon inspection the hose is connected to the top of the front axle. I guess a breather? Any idea why this would be blocked off? Surely won't serve it's purpose like that.

Is it really a plug or is it the part that is supposed to let air out, but not water in? the breather hose does not just end with an open tube, put there is a breather valve that fits in the end. If it really is blocked off, maybe the breather valve was lost and it's blocked to prevent water from getting inside. However, this could also lead to the differential leaking due to it pressurizing when it heats up. You can try and find a new breather valve, or extend the hose up higher (against the firewall) and unplug it, or purchase an after market breather valve/filter device.

Thanks again,
The hose definitely seems plugged. I'll see if i can get a breather from a wreckers. Also regarding the lack of EGR on these australian models, you mention that there is a PCV valve. Is it supposed to be located where the hose goes from the side of the air cleaner on to the rear of the valve cover. I just took off by aircleaner and the hose (shown in the first diagram above but i can only view half of it) off the side of the cleaner is just that ..only a hollow hose with a clip on each end. Or is PCV located somewhere else? Sorry the thread ended up being about 2 things.

Cheers,

Mark

The pcv valve is shown in the first schematic in post #3 above. On what would be the right side of the engine (drivers side for you?), there is an elbow that is attached to the block near the fire wall. on top of the elbow is a rubber grommet, then the valve seals in the grommet. A hose runs from the valve to a port on the intake mainfold just below the carburetor. There is another hose that runs from the port on the back of the valve cover to the air cleaner. The valve is important because it restricts flow at idle and allows more flow under full throttle conditions.
