Where would you guys have a locker and gears installed in Edmonton? I have a 1985 Bj-70. I talked briefly with Dan @ 4wheel and I have used George @ Tonka a long time ago. Just wondering where you guys would recommend.

Thanks

That is pretty much all I have been doing lately. How soon do you need them? I have an FJ Cruiser to regear and install lockers in then I am available. You can save yourself some coin if you pull the thirds yourself. What kind of lockers? do you have set up kits?

I haven't bought anything yet. I was going with 4.88 and not sure on the locker. Any recommendations? I've got lots of time.

I really like the guy over at Bear Trax. He is a super nice guy who takes the time to do things right. I've had two diffs done by him, we went over everything before hand on what I wanted, and upon pickup we went through everything again; things like what shims he started and ended with, along with all my backlash and all preload specs written down for my interest.

DO NOT go to Alberta Driveline.

Depends on what you want to do with your truck. If you want to drive it on the street a lot you can't beat a selectable locker. Once you have one you won't regret the extra money spent. If you can only budget one selectable put it in the front and an Aussie in the rear. If your trailering your truck everywhere just weld it. There is a proper way to weld spiders but even the guys with welded differentials wish they had selectable.

It all depends on your budget and what you want to do with your truck. I recommend upgrading to chromoly birfs since you have the axle apart.

Not really a daily driver but I do use it around home from time to time. I had a Detroit locker in my Fj-40 and didn't mind it. What kind of coin am I looking at?

Depends on what parts you put in. Whatever that costs plus about $500 labour if you pull the thirds yourself. I have all the proper tooling to set the gears up right as well as proper bearing preloads.

For a short wheelbase like your BJ70, I would recommend only a selectable rear locker.

Any winter driving with an aussie can turn into an unforgettable-white-knuckle-experience if that rear diff locks up on you when you hit a slippery section.

Also, Wayne at Japanese Motorsports is an experienced gear/locker installer.

Where would you guys get everything. I buy a lot through work from the states but it doesn't really matter.

No real intention of winter driving, just summer, hunting and hopefully offroad. Where could I pick up an Aussie locker and gear sets. I have 35s I am going to run so I was thinking no higher than 4.88.

Randys ring and pinion or east coast gear. Best prices I have found.

I believe the aussie locker is available through dealers in the US. Otherwise you may just have to get it shipped to you direct from down under.
You can go with Nitro gears, they seem to do the job. I have a set in my FJ40, without any complaints now for 2 years.

Yeah anything from the states is much cheaper than Canada...(duties, freight and other hidden taxes jack up the prices!).

4.88 is a nice gear with 35s. Good choice for your intentions.

I'll try and make my phone calls tomorrow to order. Hopefully get everything coming. Ill price it out and see what I can afford.

Sounds good let me know if you want me to set them up for you.

Well I spent a pile today. Two 4.88 sets, install kits, chromoly birfs, 2 arbs and compressor. Pm me your number and I'll call ya this weekend. Stuff should be here next Friday.

 That is a lot of coin!
You'll have a great set up when it's all done.

John just left to Rubicon. Be patient if he doesn't answer right away.

He Pm'd me last night while on route. Hopefully I can get everything done and make it to the crowsnest pass run. I spent that money cause its been a long time since I have been a cruiserhead. Up to my neck in our business for the last nine years. Part of the funding for the business came from selling my house, Atv and my two Fj-40's.

Cruiser are the last thing to replace :)

Beartrax or 4 wheel auto sell nitro gear. Also, if you call us we will know what a bj70 is :). Not sure about the other us diff parts distributors.

I was surprised to see chromoly inner shafts for the 70 series axles. But everything was correct and you even supplied the solid pinion sleeve for preload. However I had to machine down both sleeves about 0.050" to allow proper bearing preload. But a minor issue to have everything correct and ready to go.
