Hey guys,

Though I would start a thread and see if anybody knew of a good, fair, cruiser friendly mechanic in or around Edmonton. I know some places that I have spoken to are rather unfriendly once they realize it is a right hand drive.

If we could get a bit of a list going it may be quite helpful if anyone gets in a bind.

I have been pleased with Reg Sumaru.

Sumaru's Auto Repair
5525 - 97 street
780 438 2638

At least Reg knows his way around a 13bt.

Me haha, I am a Heavy Duty Tech. But love working on Cruisers in my spare time. I don't charge a high rate either.

X2!

He is a good guy for vehicle inspections as well (for insurance, etc.)

I always take mine to Bettchers auto 59st and 82 ave. 780-465-5571

he is not too familiar with cruisers and rhd's but he has always treated me fairly and has done good work. he goes out of his way to save me money on the repairs he has done. i recommend him to everybody i know.

also, there is wilson auto tech on 107 ave and 173 st ish. i don't know their number off hand. i had my wifes hilux there for some work. they seemed to know their way around the diesel engine and the rhd didn't scare them. they were recommended to me by a friend.

and also 4 wheel auto. it had to be mentioned.

i went to alberta driveline when i needed my driveshaft balanced. they managed to find a replacement yoke, had it installed by the next day. seemed like a no b.s. kind of place.
i was going to get them to do my t-case, till i ended up in cow-town.
of course 4wheel auto has a shop as well.

Who do you guys like as a tire shop? I'm looking to get a couple new teeny tiny road tires (BFGs) if anyone knows a place that is particularly cheap.

I would be weary of alberta driveline. They have gone downhill recently.
We have them a job this past summer, and they completely fxxxed it up!
Then when we wanted it fixed, they decided to hold no responsibility and that was with a simple ARB installation!!!

Then another guy had his entire drivetrain rebuilt their for his HJ61 (with a H55F), and it still leaked like a sieve.

I hear that Mike at M & L on 97st and almost 63rd ave is pretty fair.

cheers.

I've had good luck with Len at Automotion in the west end. He is fair and seems to have a really good appreciation for Japanese diesels. I had him remove my injection pump so I could have it rebuilt at a local specialist diesel shop. Len and Automotion was great, the diesel shop was another story......

I would avoid Toy Tech. See my post under 70 Tech. GCL Diesel Injection found one of "my" problems, and Automotion Automotive found the other. I have been back to Automotion for brakes and bearings.

Can anyone recommend a good machine shop? I have a head that will need to be machined for new valves and milled.

Also, a good exhaust shop?

Mike at M&L is good to deal with - for inspections and minor repairs.

Don at 4Wheel Auto has a short list of good mechanics

By far and away the most knowledgable, honest mechanic I have met is Mike at Caliber Automotive. He's the owner of the business and although he barely advertises, his business has grown exponentially since I started going to him a few years back. He's built up his own 4Runner and a BJ72 in addition to having worked on my HDJ81, 4Runner, Hilux Surf and Unimogs (421 and 406).

Caliber Automotive Ltd
16625 111 Avenue NW
Edmonton, AB T5M 2S2

4WheelAuto is (IMO) the best resource in town for procuring parts, but there is no question who I have install the parts I buy from them.

If anyone has any questions about the shop or particular experiences I've had, feel free to PM me. If you go to visit Caliber Automotive, let them know how you found them.

Cheers,

Corey

Mechanics

I have had a lot of work done at 4Wheel Auto.

I work downtown and I have used Man Ton automotive a few times. Good bunch of folks, seem to know what they're about and don't rape me for things that don't have to get done.

Dan at 4 Wheel Auto definitely knows his stuff, my first call for parts, always. He just got me lug nuts in less than a day that none of the big warehouses even had in all western Canada. My first work on the Hilux was at Japan Motors. Don't ever go there. Len at Automotion fixed that mess for me. He has been great ever since and does the work on all three of my vehicles. He really knows the JDM diesels.

Japanese Motorsports

Wayne Switzer (Used to work at a TOYOTA stealership, then at the Block Shop building motors) now he opened his own shop "Japanese Motorsports."
He does great work on the 2LT / 2LTE, all Diesel Cruisers and all Gassers.
Last time I checked his hour rate was cheaper than others.

Give him a ring at 780 293 0667

Dan at 4wheel Auto has been great and patient with all my noob questions...great place!!!

Caliber Automotive

That is two votes for Mike and Keith at Caliber Automotive they are honest great at what they do and have wheeled and repaired many toyota 4x4's.
