After reading through more than a year of aftermarket speaker install threads, it would appear that the Eclipse SE is among the best for fit and sound quality.

The model numbers however, are confusing to a non-audiophile. I know that Eclipse has discontinued both the older 4" and 5.25" models for the doors, and replaced with new, and that the 2-way 5.25" was replaced with a 3-way... but there are still model numbers around that are unaccounted for.

So... what is the difference between:

1) the 8242 SE and the 8243 SE 4.00" models?

2) the 8252 SE and the 8253 SE 5.25" models?

... and, are they all the same shallow depth that fit in the doors as documented in the numerous threads?

Thanks all. R -

are these water proof? I get some water drippping in the door from the ends of the lower window seal and the speaker is directly in the path, would the back have to be enclosed in plastic?

Waterproof HA! You could buy some underwater speakers if you need waterproof. Even marine speakers aren't technically waterproof. If you have a poly cone and a butyl surround you are in pretty good shape for the elements. That and protect the connections. You might try some foam speaker baffles if you want to make sure. These protect the backsides of the speakers from elements. Or just get your window seal fixed.

Ooops! I suppose you wanted US specs
