I am putting this in tech because I want guys to hear of another front door speaker choice they have to choose from . Guys in Canada will be able to walk in their local Future Shop , and pick them off the shelf ...

I choose the Infinity 6000CS 6 1/2" two-way component system . ( seperate directional tweeters , and cross over .. 270 watts peak)

At first my install guy , upon pulling out the pathetic stock speakers , thought he would have to drill out the window rail spot welds , and adjust the rails back so these new speakers would fit . He told me to leave it with him for an hour , and check back . When I returned , he smiled , and said , they may just fit ! Well to make a long story rather short .. they did !

*No cutting of the door panel
*No cutting of the door metal
*No interference with the window mechanism
*No interference with the dash as the door closes
*No spacers

He just wired up the cross overs , and bolted the speakers right in . Of course we used the Infinity speaker covers , which are black , but that isn't a worry for me . He mounted the directional tweeters to the outside of the door speakers , and aimed them so they cross paths at the drivers head .

We ran out of time , so the head install will come tomorrow . Right now I'm running off my old Jensen head , but the difference is amazing . My objective is to slowly build a nice system , pc by pc . Tomorrow the head goes in , and then this spring , I'll throw in an amp and sub ...

Here's the intended head : Panasonic CQ-C8300 MP3 CD Car Deck

And the front door speakers I choose : Infinity 6000CS 6 1/2" Car Speakers

I will post some pics later tonite ... or as soon as my Silver star membership kicks in , and I don't have to worry about counting attachments .

I just wanted Guys to know of another choice .. especially Canadians . I'm used to hearing from US guys and Crutchfields etc .. so I wanted to find something worthwhile here at home . Something found everyday at a big name store ... turnkey . Something which didn't require drilling , or grinding .. cutting of headaches , but sounded great at the end of the day . :)

Cheers ,

TY

Thanks , but I have yet to even take pics ... the management there is a bit picky about guys hanging around in the shop .. and I also wanted to give him room to work , so I jetted after I removed both door skins for him and we talked about tweeter placement .

I'll take some tonite ...

TY

PS : I ordered my membership a few days ago , so Paypal should activate it soon .. no worries , the pics will come . :)

You didn't mention the price on those speakers.

Great news Tyler, I have 2 sets of Kenwood Excelon xr-50p component speakers which were brought out just last weekend and haven't been able to decide where to stick the tweeters. I did have to order a spacer for the front doors as it hits the window rail.

Where did he mount the crossover/ I was talking with an installer and he didn't like the idea of mounting it in the door for both weather and the shock of closing the door. Think I'm going with under the front seat since the security box is already there.

MP3 players are the balls!

will they work with the stock head unit?

Beo , they were $300 CDN installed . I posted the link so you could oogle all the specs , including price ;)

Rick , My installer made something clear to me .. that "in a perfect world , the tweeters would be as close to the main speaker as possible . Hence he mounted them on the doors , just aft of the mains . He used wedge spacers to angle each of them up towards the drivers head .

CDN_Cruiser , I am uncertain whether the stock unit would driver these . I have a 4x50 MOSFET head , that will drive them , but I will be getting an amp for them before long , and then they'll really come into there own !

As they sit right now , off the Jensen head unit (until tomorrow) , they are a big step up in sound .. I drove for a few hrs tonite .. into the US and back , and it was wierd being able to feel the sound in my chest , as well as it vibrating in my thighs , and thumping thru the floor into my soles . I think I like it ! :D

CDN_C , run into a TO Future shop , and ask the install guys . Maybe you can start with the speakers , and stock amp , and replace the head as $$ permits .

Cheers ,

TY

Ty - thanks - they look interesting. Did he have to use spacers? I'd like to see what the install looks like - especially how the component tweeter is mounted.

Cheers, Hugh

Guys ,

My install guy is supposed to call me today .. spur of the moment , to get me in to install the head unit . Either way , I'm going to get some pics of the speakers for you . If I pull the skins I'll be able to show you the crossover location ... and of course pics of the tweeter placement on the doors . Not much to show as far as anything else goes I think , because they would load and go .. no muss , no fuss :)

TY

PS : Maybe the guys at future shop will pull another set of 6000cs's and I can snap a shot of them side by side with the bizzare stock ones .. Not sure if I mentioned this , but the installer looked at the stock speakers and immediately had the idea that the Land Cruiser must have been already built , when they discovered a speaker wouldn't easily fit with the intended grill and low profile , so they may have gone out and built a speaker just for this application . For those of you who have not seen them , they are wierd . Shallower than any soup bowl ... from the mounting edge to the base of the magnet is narrower than my thumb .

The stock speakers...LOL. Compare the sound of before to any replacement. Also, a speaker is suppose to move air to create sound, a cone pointing out is not going to move much air... The stock speakers :ban:

Whoa, noone else noticed this? Tyler was let into the US...that ain't right!! :flipoff2: I have to make some calls and tighten up that security.. :D

Yeah , yeah .... you're probably the reason I get hassled all the time anyway , so don't bother . They're just fun to mess with ... show up , music blaring .. ma hanky head dress on .. guy gets to asking me how many times I cross into the States ... "A dozen times or so - *insert pause* - at various crossings .." . "Oh yeah ? Like where ?? " . "Here , somewhere in Manitoba .. Buffalo , NY .... depends" . They were too laid back the other nite though to bite ... just sent me packin .. :flipoff2:

Yomama, I've always understood that a speaker creates the same sound both in front and behind just out of phase, hence the need for an enclosure so the out of phase waves won't cancel each other out. I realise there is more than that to enclosures but the cones surface is the same, moving the same amount of air with the same force. Am I missing something?

Yes, the cone of the speaker is only shaped like a cone because it makes the material more rigid. The deeper the cone, the better, up to a point. The front and the back of the woofer produce almost identical sound. I've sometimes mounted woofers "inside out" to gain enclosure space... and increase bling factor.

And as far as moving air, the 6" woofer in the door isn't ever going to move much air because of the low freqency its trying to play. More air is moved as the frequency goes down, and the speaker slows down. Without a tuned structure to create back pressure against the back of the cone, they will just over extend and hurt themselves. A 6" can be an effective woofer, but they can't play low, loud, mounted in a Cruiser door. They are a very effective mid bass in a Cruiser though if you can get the sloppy 180HZ curve down.

Ok a few pics for starters .. they kinda suck , as I'm not the best photographer . These are just to show general placement ... of the tweeter in particular .
