Another fun thing is to find the sites of old lookout towers!

We should certainly set up some expo trips around here! I would love to take advantage of the options NC has to offer.

When we head back to CO I'm planning on helping my dad fish every public lake in the state when he retires! That has been a life-long goal of his.

I find this sort of "wheeling" more rewarding than rock crawling...that is just me.

I agree while I enjoy the rock crawling quite a bit, there's nothing like packing the truck and heading out for a few days to find only dirt roads and primitive views.

I think the caverns would be an interesting addition to whatever the trip(s) end up being.

Another interesting example closer to the triad is the roads running along and crisscrossing the Dan, Mayo, rivers? I have a nice photo from my first digital camera, with Emmie standing on the shore next to the Dan. I used to take my kayak up there, some cool class I type stuff, fun to swim in too. The roads were mostly dirt and unmaintained!

(But you will want good foot protection, lots of beer drinking/glass bottles broken in the area I am thinking about)

An Expo trip combined with some canoeing and kayaking is EVEN better!! I know I have the Scanoe, was planning on hooking up to do some fishing later this year in the spring!

I will see if I can pull it up in Google maps to look at!!

Wanted to bump this up to see if anybody had any additional thoughts on trips we could take?

;)
It'd be a nice expedition type wheeling, I here there's a few out there that have quite the equipt trucks for this type...;)

Hell Andrea's Matrix is an expo rig on this side of the country for 99% of all historical things :flipoff2::grinpimp::popcorn:

Guys - I'm working on mapping out expedition style runs in SC, GA, NC and TN. I make maps for a living (well, one of the things I do) so I'll have hardcopy maps available along with gps tracks (probably gpx format but others will be available) along with online Google Maps. I'll keep y'all updated on what trips I have available. This spring, summer and fall I hope to go on one or two scouting trips a month. I'm not just focusing on the roads (or trails) but also on fishing, camping, and other rec activities along the way. Since we are kinda sparse on availability of overland trips we have to mix in other activities  to take up the time!

ETA: I forgot to say that I have historic maps going back into the mid 1800's that I will be using to locate old roads. Most of these are probably closed and not legal to traverse but it will be cool to know where the old horse and stage coach roads are.

That is brilliant eventhough!

Please let us know how we can help out...this is the exact thing that I, and I'm sure others, are looking for.

If possible, I bet a number of us might tag along on the scouting runs as well!

I know tracy city in TN is an old county deeded road so the traverse is legal. It would take more time and money and red tape to legally close it than to leave it deeded for public access. I wonder if theres a database of old county roads to peruse. Maybe we can find something similar.

Awesome effort Steve, keep us posted. Go team twosprings !!!

Thanks Guys. I have databases of many of the public roads in GIS format (Geographic Information System). I can fairly easily mine these to locate the legal routes. I'm hoping to do pre-scouting on my computer and set up areas to check out. There are not nearly as many routes in the east as there are in the west but we still have some options. These overland options might be dirt in places and gravel in some but its better than blacktop. I already know of some areas of FS roads in WNC, SC and GA that I want to explore. I also have a partner in crime that is helping out with WNC and TN explorations and can map out some significant routes - like half day to one day routes with most mileage on dirt. This would be a great opportunity for dual sport bikes but alas - the :princess: has said "hell no" to me getting a dirt bike. :crybaby:

More info to come in a week or two.

I'd be up for some scouting runs as well...sounds like lots of fun!

Looking through some of the threads from a few years back it looks as if you have already scouted some areas near Boone/Blowing Rock: https://forum.ih8mud.com/nc-olde-north-state-cruisers/171432-suggestions-weekend-2.html#post2460851.

Greg, did you ever post up additional info on this scouting run (and your aphid attack :D)?
