I'm sure this has been covered a million times so don't flame me for being new. What's the best way to mate early (71) driveshafts to late (79) axles?

best way...hhhmmm...

One option is to locate fine spline undrilled flanges for the axles.

Another would be to use the slip yoke from a 79 and the mainshaft from the 71...IIRC, the shaft splines are identical.

Another might be to weld shut and redrill the existing 79 flanges.

Not sure which is best, personally I'd do the flange swap.

If I go looking for a set of late driveshafts, what's the range of years that will match up with the 79 flange?

79 flange outta match a 74-79 4-speed tranny. 73-older are the same, 80+? is the split case and I honestly don't know if those match or not...

Not certain, but I beleive the lenght of the 79 shafts is different than your early 70's. the 4 speed will be longer in the front shorter in the rear than the 3 speed.
