Are those plastic indentations in my 1994 HDJ81V usable for switches?

it can be done, but requires support of the switches behind the dash -- will not simply snap in place.

Of course, that would make sense.

Probably smarter to go with something completely non-factory looking, then.

Anyone know how much room there is behind them?

Thanks for the reply!

Your best bet may be to repurpose OEM switches as they will actually fit in that strange space. The curve makes it really hard to fit anything else that would be secure and look proper. What are you looking to accomplish with extra switches?

You're right about the curve. Hrm.

I'm trying to plan my dash in its final form, before starting the project.

So far, my list looks like this:

- aux driving lights (will probably re-purpose existing fog light switch, since I will lose those lights with the swap to Depo assemblies anyway)
- flood lights/rock lights on same switch
- USB accessory master circuit switch, so I can kill the RF noise when I'm trying to hear a weak signal
- possibly a dual battery control switch
- switch for proper strobe lights, so avoid getting hit by idiots when parked on a busy road for SAR purposes

A.

I've been wondering this same thing. I stare at the blanks trying to figure out how I can make them into something useful. I guess we could get a bunch of the defrost and ECT buttons and repurpose them for aux lights, compressor, etc. and put them in the blanks.

I was on the same boat .. just decide no to screw my new dash .. but I can tell there is plenty space behind ..

I bought a ECT or a Defrost switch (cant remember which one) to use there for my aux lights but never figured out the wiring or installed it. But that was the route i was going, maybe find a wiring diagram and hook em up with new labels from a label maker or something.

Good luck

I have two OEM curved fog switches (84160-60030) that control my front aux lights in that spot. This thread gives some info to wire it up correctly. Early OEM fog light switch Part No.? As well as what other switches might be available.

Thanks, that's very useful.

Doesn't really help with mounting switches in the spots that are not cut out, but I'll have to figure that out.

I did not do the install of the switches myself, but my understanding is that the blank spaces were cut out of the dash and a bracket made of ABS was attached to the switches to support them. I am not sure exactly what the bracket was also attached to for additional support. see below for picture of installed switches -- the two on the far right --

I'm not sure what this talk of "supporting switches" is about, but the blanks just pop out and the OEM switches pop in, there's no need for further support behind the dash if using OEM switches.

Where there are blanks this is true. But where there are indentations, but no blanks, not so much. look below:

Are those not blanks that can be pushed out from the inside? I have some new-in-packaging blanks like this at home, and there are markets that used these extra slots for things like subtank switches, etc.
