Was the early 4 speed, non-syncro 1st w/the single speed T-case, an FJ-25 only were some used in early FJ-40/45? A friend has an early 40 body & frame, frame number is below 8,000, that has the early 4 speed & T-case. My guess is that somewhere along the line a 25 motor/trans/T-case got dropped in. What say the Jedi masters of Toyota?

I believe John Pardi said that he had seen an early 40 the same way. That's all I know about that. Nothing surprises me on these, they did a lot of odd things from the parts bin.

Wouldn't mind seeing pictures. I'm not sure that the centered output of a 25 transfer case would clear the offset center crossmember of a 40. That might be a good place to start looking for clues. :hhmm:

Don't know about axles, they're gone. I would guess:rolleyes:, that a frame number that low would have had a centred rear. I base that on the fact that my '62 FJ-45 had a centred rear pumpken originally. Which I swapped out , like a fool, about 20 years ago. There isn't much left of the 40, it's really just a carcass, the tranny cover is gone. So I cant tell if the holes were factory or not. I might try and get the trans/T-case, just to save it from the scrap heap. My original thought was I could use it to replace the side loader 3 spd. in my 45 and stay with in OEM for the time frame. My side loader has a bad 2nd gear, and I want to stay as original as I can.

Pictures is all I can say. With the tranny cover gone it should be pretty easy. Also pictures of everythings else VIN plate, VIN stamp on frame, wheel wells, front and rear frame members.

Here's a picture to help you ID a 25 tranny/transfer.

Note that the 25 crossmember dips down in the center and the driveshaft goes over it. All the three speed 40's, even with the centered rear diff, had an offset rear output from the transfer case and an offset crossmember hump that the driveshaft went under. The driveshaft from a 25 setup in a 40 frame will run smack into the crossmember.

We love mysteries. :)

that combo was actaully listed for the FJ55(non US) in 68-9

see the options on the far upper right

I had to copy and zoom it to read it. It's tuff getting old. I think it meant the floor mat was a FJ55 only option not the rest. I know that Toyota had a full synchro four speed before the H41/H42 but didn't think it was mated to a single speed transfer case. I'm working on doing some trading right now to get an early four but it mates to the two speed transfer case. I think the early one is 5.33 to 1 compared to the 4.99 to 1 of the H41. Pretty the FJ25 four speed is 5.41 to 1.

We still need pictures to figure out what this early FJ40 has.

55 or 40.....dunno but it was shown as an option for one or both......unless a miss print(which I doubt)

Mistery solved, it is a 25 4 spd. At some point the engine/trans/transfer was swaped INTO the '40. Those responsible cut out the cross member behind the T-case. I pulled the cover, it's full of water & mud. Appearantly, the truck was pulled from a stream bank in a farm field. It used to be pretty comon around here to use old car carcass's as errotion control. My guess is long ago the '40 needed a "good used" motor or trans and the owner used a 25 as the donor.

I think that the 4 spd in the brochure is the "early" full syncro unit that is shown in the black cover chassis & body FSM. It clearly shows the counter shaft w/gears as seperate parts, the H41/42 has a unit counter shaft.

Sorry no pics, the digital cam didn't survive a water operation.:o

Well, I am going out side to work on my '45. Anybody got a side loader 3 spd they want to get rid of? Hopefully close to Colorado:D

Can't be much worse than this one......

Seriously, it's possible it could yield a few good parts. Especially the 3-4 synchros. Try to save it and not just scrap it. ;)

Still interested in pictures. We've never seen a FJ40 under 10,000 on the VIN. Some picture can prove one way or another where Toyota started the VIN numbers.

On your transmission issue do you have all the shift linkage to go with it. The early shift linkage was two piece from the end of the steering column back to the transmission with a pivot point at the rear motor mount. I removed the column shifter from my 68 back in 1975 and haven't owned a column that's newer than 63 since so I going from memory here but I think the linkage goes straight from the end of the steering column to the levers on top of the transmission. I guess I just saying make sure you get all the parts you need.
