E locker light flashing

I tried searching this forum before posting.

A coupla years ago my buddy bought a new 79 series truck. His rear locker has never worked. The light flashes, indicating it is not locking.

I have heard this was a common problem, that these trucks were sent out of the factory with an improperly indexed locker motor gear set, leaving the locker disengaged at the end of the motor run.

I'll be having a look at it in the near future and expect to be able to rectify the problem sans parts ordering.

Questions:

A) Is this information accurate?
B) Anyone else dealt with this?

Never heard of those problems.

Most of the e-lockers have set of conditions that must be met for locker engagement. Must be in low range and in 4WD (though they can be tricked), and some require that you're going less than 5kph (speed sensor).

The locker's dog teeth must be allowed to engage - can be done off-road quite easily, but on a hard surface a slow turn will clock the teeth so that they can line up.

Given this truck has not seen pavement for the past two years, I believe all the conditions have been met more than once for locker engagement.

I'll confirm the electrical signal for engagement to the locker motor as part of my diagnosis/repair.

I don't believe it. I have a 79 with elocker and never have a problem with it. It would be easy to check what is going on though - remove the locker motor and actuator and check movement while engaging the switch, if you get full travel then it should be locking.

I do know of two things that can happen with the lockers, well maybe three:

1. The magnets fall off the motor and won't allow it to work (mostly on older lockers0.

2. The locker will be engaged but the light still flashes, lift a tire and engage the locker, if the tire wont move then it is engaged.

3. if people go through water it will get inside the locking assembly and rust the mechanism, easy to check - and I run vent hoses off my diff and locker actuator.

If the actuator doesnt engage then check power to the motor, if no power then maybe a connection was missed somewhere.
