I'm replacing the dead E-brake cable on my 85 FJ60 and noticed that the new cable from the dealer has a different bracket design and hole pattern than my old cable. The first pic shows the old cable installed and the other two show a side by side comparison of the old and new cable. The bracket is the only difference between the two (other than the fact the old one doesn't work) and the Toyota dealer assures me that I have the right part based on my VIN. I'm sure I can make some kind adapter plate if I have to, but I'd like to know if I have the right part first. Let me know if you're run across this issue before or if I have the wrong part for an 85 FJ60

You might have the right part for the VIN but maybe the rear axle was swapped at some point along with the matching e-brake cable. I'd take both cables to the dealer and see if he can match it up to an earlier or later cable. Making adapters for new parts from the dealer should be a last resort IMHO.

i have a similar problem, swapped a full float in and the fj62 bracket looks like your new one, the full float like your old one. i'm planning to separate the brackets (grind off the rivet heads) and bolt them back together as appropriate. you just have to be carefull on the one you want to keep to preserve the rubber tab between the metal pieces.

if you find another part at the dealer that has the right bracket i'd like to know it, that would be easier and a new cable wouldn't hurt. i assumed it was a US vs rest of the world diference as the full float came from AUS

So do you think this means I have a full float axle? Would this be factory or swaped out by the PO? I was focusing on the brakes and haven't researched the axle differences yet, so sorry if that's a stupid question.

does your rear axle have something that sticks out of the rim, lookls like the front hub/rims but no switch. that was a bad description sorry

that isn't what i was implying, sorry for the confusion. i think there is a difference between the fj60 style and fj62 style perhaps.

if you have a full float, the brake drum will have a hub sticking out of it like in this picture
the drum isn't in the pic but yo can see the studs and flange it mates up against. if you do have one, it wasn't available as an option for US cruisers.

in any case, the brake parts are the same*. toyota likes to use parts for multiple applications :bounce:

*unless you have a heavy duty full float but i really doubt it so i'll stop rambling

I couldn't get your link to work, but based on your description I don't think I have a hub sticking out of my rear drums. Either way, I still don't know what my current issue is.

Could any 60 or 62 owners look under their trucks to see what type of cable brackets they have. I'll make an adapter plate if I need too, but I'm still trying to figure out if I have the right parking brake cable for my 85 FJ60. Since I'm spending the money on a new cable (that can still be returned), I'd like to buy the right part.

I don't remember off hand what my setup looks like.

But, in pic 1, just to the right of the ebrake bracket on the axle, there's another bracket.

Just for fun, see if the butterfly mounting holes on the new cable jive with the mounting holes in that bracket.

.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the cost of the new ebake cable. (...yah, just trying to save myself the trip to the dealership).
Mine's seized after being parked for 4 years, and if the new one's cheap enough, I won't bother fighting with the old one....

PM if you'd rather
Cheers,
Steve

Contact Cruiserdan out here....and have him answer the question.

I have replaced many a ebrake cable on a 60 series, and do not remember one having that style of locating bracket on it.....
