Yep. That's the one and no core charge either. I'm surprised they stock it, but they are possible to get.

Why? At the time we ran, campfires were legal in the wilderness that borders the trail. The right of way of the trail is 150yds on either side. Anything beyond that was ok.

not correct. After July 1st NO fires except in established Forest Service campgrounds, period. Even after the Fresno club and others have recently put in FS style fire rings at Ershim you still cannot have a fire...Ershim is not a FS campground. There's a thread with this info on Marlin Crawler.

He's legit. Just because he's new here...doesn't make him new to the game. He probably has more times down the Dusy than most.
 
Just to clarify things....this is from the forest supervisor of the Sierra National Forest. Dated 6/29/15

Fires are restricted everywhere BUT the places listed in Exhibit A and B. Which include Dinkey Lakes, Kaiser, and John Muir Wilderness, which all border Dusy.

We should have stopped in Prather and asked the FS directly. Next year I will. The signage at the south gate start was unambiguous. "Campfires permitted". We heard from others that only applied to the wilderness area (which made no sense). Just for the record, we all had permits, too. I was kind of in favor of not having a fire just because it is so dry, but the Forest Service sign practically invites you to have a camp fire.
 
Gave the Prather office a call to get to the bottom of this. They basically said it's a grey area and admitted to not being able to provide a firm yes/no answer. They said going 150yds from the center of the trail would put you in wilderness, where fires are currently permitted. However, crossing into wilderness without a wilderness permit is technically not legal, so to be in full compliance they recommended obtaining a wilderness permit.

correct. So, if you slog your gear 150' from the road center and camp you can have a fire.
The High Sierra RS gang is a little more up on things. (station is near the split in the Edison road that goes to either Edison or Florence)
Usually the Prather station gals are very good with info but not always ;)
 
Sounds like even the FS doesnt know what is going on. I'm sure no one wants to risk burning down the forest, intentionally break rules, get fined/ in trouble or put the future of Dusy in jeopardy. I think the moral of the story is to call the Prather office on the way to the trail head and whatever they say goes.

That area has been getting a steady batch of all-day storms for weeks now. enough to put fire danger down? hardly, but I sure don't see why a small fire in an established pit couldn't be had in the middle of or after a rain/hail storm :p
Storms will be increasing as this year ends (see latest info on current monster El Nino) so the fire ban may end before wheeling season...one can only hope.
 
Bad, son #2 and I were on the Rubithon this year in the wagon run (60 and 80) and wish we had had a chance to talk more. This write up is in general very inspiring, thanks for doing it. I, too, got to benefit from getting to (slightly) know Rick and Andy on this year's Con. Doing Dusy Ershim is on my bucket list. Pretty sure that between my two sons and I we'll have three wagons on next years Rubicon (two 80's and a 60). Maybe we'll be up for a run on Dusy Ershim next year if anyone's so inclined. I'll be making a few more mods to my 60 based on my experience during Rubithon. Like you last year, this year's Rubithon represents my first 'real' trail run. So I've got a lot to learn yet. But just reading this thread has taught me a lot. Since you're from Reno maybe you're a member of Battle Born Cruisers. Son #1 Justin, @justintpryor , just joined and went to last night's meeting for the first time. He's in school at UNR and is looking to get plugged into the community. Summer school kept him from this year's Rubithon, but not next year...

with all due respect...I live in those woods...it is a matchbook up here right now, and fires break out all the time...there is a reason no fires are allowed up here right now..if you don't like it and don't think you need to respect this, then stay the fxxx off of my mountain...the city is where people who think like that need to stay...Nothing personal. I don't s*** on your doorstep, don't s*** on mine...
 
I may be a troll, but I'm not a newbie, and my green has faded to a light brown...
 
Above 9000 feet, it isn't that dry. I think that's why the official forest service sign at the start says fires are ok. However, having camped, hiked and 4 wheeled in the Sierra for decades, forgoing campfires is a good plan. A couple of our group members were set on having a fire (2 nights out of 5) and the FS sign said it was ok, and we used only established fire rings, and sustainably harvested wood, I think our fires were legal and mostly appropriate, though as stated, I generally do without. Be assured that "dead out" practices were observed, and we had 4 fire permits, and the official sign said permitted. Trust me, others who are less responsible are up there having fires right now.
 
no doubt, but to think the rules don't apply enough to not check...shameful...I say this to those who would have done so with disregard...ignorance in no excuse...it IS more damp at elevation...but the ground is still covered in friable dust, and I don't trust city slickers to keep their s*** under control...best defense is to not be there...

my comments were not directed at you directly nor were they pertaining to disregarding fire restrictions. Calm down.
