Anyone else seen this ?
I checked my air filter last weekend and found that dust was getting past it (not through as far as I can tell).
Explained all to local Toyota dealer but they can't look at it till next week. As I am going away for a time and I wanted this thing cleaned up, I suggested that I open up the air filter box, photograph the problem, clean it myself and fit a new filter element. They agreed.

This is what I found and the only real off-road I have done in 6 months and 10,000mile is a week in the Victorian High Country staying way back from everyone as I didn't want to eat dust !!! (In most photos, that is the 'filtered' side of the old element you are looking at. I am convinced that the dust is getting around and not through the filter.

Over on LCCOOL.org I believe there was a complaint on this as well. Specifically for the diesels, the seal is not hard enough rubber and clamped down hard enough to prevent dust from getting around.

Definitely complain to Toyota...but I don't think we have that problem with US models. It would be hard to tell as we have some sort of permanent filter mounted inside the upper airbox portion as well, making it difficult to see the edges. When I wiped my upper mesh screen, however, there was no dust.

Remember: dust will take the path of least resistance, which in your case is the edge.

Good luck!

Interesting I will be checking mine this weekend now......

Any news on the dust issue, friend?

You should get a snorkel, they reduce the dust intake quite significantly.

Wow, what an answer. Have you read previous posts at all?)))

No more news as yet, due into the dealer in 2 weeks. I've taken an engine oil sample for testing.

I took off the top of my airbox and checked the inlet and it's clean. Some very light dust, but not significant at all.

For the 5.7's, we have a replaceable air filter, but also there is some sort of mesh screen in the upper shroud of the airbox. Not sure what it is or how to replace it -- looks permanent.
