Mine (2018 LC) needs changing, and the dealer has obviously never touched it (which is a good thing -- after reading others', I keep that glove compartment locked whenever I take it in). I found a nice little straightforward video on how to change it I found about how to change it (), but on that video the guy said he uses EP Auto CP285 filters. I looked those up on Amazon -- they are indeed pretty inexpensive, about $8 each, but they've got activated carbon, and I have read that this can significantly reduce your mpg. What is y'all's opinion? I could get the Bosch 6055C instead, but they are HEPA and maybe this is also too restrictive for airflow? Or I could fork over $28.55 on ToyotaParts.com and get a genuine one that doesn't seem carbon activated. (Note: I do not want to get a reuseable / washable one -- those just seem to spark too many bitter controversies on LC forums, lol.) Okay, your thoughts here: Thanks!

Taking care of this LC has become my obsession.
You’re going to fit in well around here.

I was new to the platform a few years ago and the group has been more than welcoming, supportive, and patient with my newbie questions. You’ll quickly realize that you have an entire cruiser family who are more than happy to help you with anything, often with some sarcasm but always with good intentions.

Finding a good dealership is difficult because the Cruiser was never sold is massive numbers so there are not a ton of of dealer techs with experience. If yours is out of warranty the. I’d encourage you to seek out a local Toyota/Cruiser independent shop. I have to imagine there is one in your area and I’d also wager there are some members on here who can point you towards a good one. Heck, mine is still under warranty and I do the work myself and what I can’t do I go to my local independent shop.

Good insight here. I too can attest to the great intel gained from this forum and also solid replies to (not to often) brilliant questions I have.

Check your state forum too for solid info on local specialty shops. I got some great rec's there for places I would have never found otherwise.

Owner of a 2018 too! First thing I did after finding and reading posts on this site was to grease the KDSS valves. Easy peasy but huge potential rewards. I would have never known or guessed to do that without this forum. What I've learned on this site has totally justified my subscription.

Thank you for the video you posted, I'm also about to change my cabin air filter so that's very helpful.

I went oem. Yes a bit more expensive but I usually like to keep oem parts if I can help it. A few have spoken about reduced airflow (although not huge) with the carbon filter. I didn't want that.

Welcome to the board, we always love pictures of LC's here.

Also I'm very sorry about your loss. I love what your doing keeping the truck maintained. He would be very proud!!
Thank you so much. I feel closest to him when I'm in that Land Cruiser. It's weird, but I do! Where do you get your oem parts? Directly from the dealer or from a site like toyotapartsdeal.com?

That's great to know. I've already learned a lot from this site. I'll have to put KDSS on my list for the next learning curve to tackle. Right now I'm trying to figure out whether my engine air filter box is sealing properly or letting in some dirt.

That's very interesting. There's a Toyota dealership network in Oregon, Lithia Toyota -- we got this LC from the Grants Pass dealer but in our city they have a dealer, too. I have found them to be really generous and responsive -- they have taught me a lot -- but it's also clear that they aren't LC specialists and so it's a little hit-and-miss whether a particular mechanic knows exactly the deal with my LC. There are two specialty shops (Land Cruiser NW and one other) up in Portland, two hours away. One of the best mods my husband worked on was creating a platform in the back end: he removed the back seats including airbags and video screens -- he worked with really good local car stereo / auto mod place to build a beautiful carpeted platform. So it's our sleeping space, too. (Well, now it's my sleeping space.)

My cabin air filter arrived from Amazon today. I have it on a 6 month subscription so this is my queue that I need to change it.

But in changing it, I realize that the filter itself isn’t marked for a direction of air flow (unlike home AC filters).
So do you guys think it matters which way I put the filter into the tray? Up or down?
And if so, is there a prescribed orientation?

Can you link to it on Amazon so I can make a better educated opinion?

TIA

Two pics I found of that filter do show an air flow arrow:

But if the filter you have does indeed have no such air flow arrow marking, then I don't think it makes any difference which way you put it in.

Of course, if it does have the arrow, then it should be installed with the arrow pointing down.

HTH

Edit to add: If there is any printing on the edge of the filter, and no arrow, a good guess would be to install the filter with the printing right side up, not upside down.

Interesting. And thanks for looking it up.
But sadly there are no markings on what I received.
Makes me wonder if I got a fake.

But it makes me realize I don’t know which way the air flows in there. Does it flow upwards?

(and the two sides not shown below are no different)

Return this. That looks like some cheap, knock off sh*t imo.

I wouldn’t be too surprised if so.
Last time I got a delivery of this filter from Amazon, the box was correct but the filter inside was wrong.
I did the return on Amazon and they shipped me a second one and told me to not bother returning the first.
The second one was also the wrong size but in the right box. Again I tried to return it to Amazon and they refunded me my money and told me to throw away the filter.
I went to O’rielly and got the right part - though it wasn’t Fram brand.

At least the filter I received this time was the right size.
Does anybody know which auto shop carries fram? I’ll drive to one of those and pick up a Fram to compare.

Though, truthfully, I do wonder if it makes a difference. After all, until 2021 when I joined this forum, I didn’t even know cars had a cabin air filter (and thus never changed it) and I never noticed an issue with my AC or heat in a car.

if you’re set on not going with a Toyota cabin filter, get a carquest branded cabin air filter. They’ll have them at advance auto and oreilley’s…pretty sure about o’reilley. Fram air filters are nothing special. In fact, they’re becoming “thinner” compared to what they were on engine filters per some outside of mud forum posts.

I used to be a big Napa/wix guy - no more. If not going with Toyota air filters, try carquest first.

Edit: it looks like oreilley has micro guard branded air filters. I don’t know about their air filters, but their oil filters are made by the same holding company that has delivered consistent quality vs some of their competition - cough wix cough.
