Lets go Wheeeeeeeeeeelin'!!!!

The Cullowhee trip for this weekend has been canceled because many of the trails we wanted to ride are 'seasonal' and closed until April 1. Hopefully we will get a trip planned soon after April 1.

Instead of Cullowhee we are going to go to Durhamtown Plantation in Union Point GA which isn't too far south of Athens and just under 2.5 hours from Greenville, about 1.5 hours from downtown Atlanta, and a bit less than 4 hours from Charleston SC. Check out their website @ Durhamtown Home Page.

Here is a little snap-shot of what they have to offer:
- 15 miles of ORV trails of all difficulties. Every hard obstacle has an easy by-pass so anyone can ride together in a group
- A rock outcrop longer than a football field that offers some crawlin' opportunities
- Pro-shop - looks like mostly dirt bike stuff
- Lodging - tent camping, 135 RV sites, bath house, 42 cabins
- Restaurant! You won't have to eat your own cooking!
- Dirt bike and ATV course
- Rifle/pistol range and sporting clays range - some of you guys have been wanting some range time but this is not part of the official UC event and you participate in range time at your own risk.
- Hunting - have to check seasons but Hogs might be open
- Fishing lake
- BMX and skate park
- Dirt bike rentals! (The :princess: said I'm not allowed... :frown:)
- I probably left some stuff out

Trail fees:
- $20 per driver and $5 per passenger for day fees
- $15 per driver and $5 per passenger for night riding

I'm thinking about renting a cabin for UC folks to crash in. The cabin would sleep from around 6 - 12 and probably cost less than $20 per night per person. For that you would get heat and a full bath. Give me some feedback on this before I reserve a cabin. There is a two night minimum so I would probably rent it for Friday night and Saturday night and we would check-out Sunday.

Lodging Plans
Cabin
Juice +1
Steen +1 or 2 (own bedroom)

Camping
Brock +1
Karl +1 and maybe more

I spoke with the owner, Mike. He sounds like a great guy. I sent him an email with a link to this post so he can chime in.

I was bummed that we couldn't hit Cullowhee but I think this could be a GREAT trip!

I 'borrowed' some pics from the Durhamtown website and posted them below as examples of what the park has to offer.

Please post up if you can make it - I plan on being there!

I made plans for Cullowhee so will be gong somewhere...so might as be there. :D It is only ONE DAY....as I will need to come on 20th I guess?

Ya confused me a bit. I'm planning on showing up Friday night 20th and leaving Sunday morning 21st. I hope to rent a cabin to sleep 6-8 that UC can split between members. There is a two night minimum for cabin rentals on the weekend.

I saw the ONE day of wheeling......I am driving up Friday 20th to camp out....and leaving 22nd on Sunday for back home. I was counting on camping on Upper Bald so doing same in GA is no different. LOL

I will see you guys there...as like I said...I made plans to go to the Whee....so wherever is fine for me and the wife. Se you there.

I'm in on this one. May bring the wife and kid. Who knows. I've said that before :meh:

Count me in on the cabin for sure.

Sounds good - Heat is good in February!

Since the wife and kid might be along I'll put you in your own room.

That might actually get them there. I'll get an update asap on whether I can coral them into going. If I can't, a place on the floor is fine too!

10-4 I figure most people, at least the early ones to speak up - should have a bed but from the sounds of things everyone won't have their own bedroom. I'll bring some earplugs so I don't have to listen to the snorers... :p

That would be reason enough to throw me in a room to myself :hmm: So I'm told anyway.

You know I'm down! I'm pretty bummed about no Cullowhee but rules is rules, I reckon. Me and the lady-friend are comin. Might even have a couple fellas taggin along. Not sure yet. Most likely Me + 1 for camping. I'll post up when I know for sure. Oh and we'll be bringin some guns. Good times shall ensue!

Sounds good - see you there!

Not sure I can make this or not. I will be getting back from Disney they day before, and the truck should be done, but if the weather is rough or I still have the boys with no top on the truck it will be doubtful.

Will know more soon.

I hope to see you there Dan. I need someone to  with!

Yes - there is a gun range at Durhamtown.

If you want to shoot at the range you do so at your own risk.

If you bring guns I ask three things which all boil down to being SAFE:
1) do not handle any gun unless you are on the range,
2) do not handle any gun if you have had even a sip of alcohol, and
3) keep your guns secured (on yourself or in your vehicle) - there will be children present.

If you don't do these things I will not be pleasant to deal with. I am a gun fan myself, own a bunch, am an avid hunter, sport shooter, yadda yadda yadda - BUT - we have to stay safe.

I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY agree w/ and second Steve. I'm very picky about who I shoot with. I love guns and love to shoot, but safety is a BIG DEAL and I'm really glad to see that this has been addressed.

I had Whee on the calendar for that weekend so I'll probably come if the weather is decent, i.e. not cold and rainy both.
I will probably be on street tires, I'm hoping for a Carolina Beach or OBX long weekend soon so I'm staying rigged for that, but it will be good to see you guys again, camp, shoot the breeze and maybe some targets etc. I will maybe not put the swampers back on until GSMTR unless something unforeseen comes up.
Which is to say: When is the next trip to the holy land?
b

Bill - I want a trip to the Holy Land ASAP after April 1 which is when the seasonal trails open up again. I'll look at getting that on the calendar pronto!

I just called Durhamtown - they have NO big cabins available. They only have 2 primitive cabins available (1 w/ 2 single beds and 1 w/ 1 single and 1 double.) These have heat a roof and a front porch - thats it. A bath house is 100 feet away.

You do not need reservations for primitive camping but I would call ahead just to be sure.

A mobile home is available for rent 3 miles off site - sleeps 10 and costs $150 per night. I was looking to get a cabin for UC but passed on the mobile home.

Take home message - if you want a roof over your head call now for a primitive cabin - other wise you will be sleeping in a tent.
